Years ago, when I was in college, I was gifted an opal pendant and ring. Of course, not knowing anything about them, over time the stones cracked and rendered the pieces unwearable. Because of that, I stopped even thinking about buying opal jewelry until recently. I bought a really pretty blue opal earring and pendant pair, and also have some pink opal pieces. They seem to be holding up a lot better than the white opals I once had.

If I knew how to keep white opals from meeting the same fate as the first ones, I would buy those, too. SO pretty!

My Mom had a few opal pieces.  One set she had was a pin and earring set that looked like teardrop balloons with milky opal chips suspended in liquid inside. the "balloon" was suspended from a gold bow.  Very pretty effect as they floated around with any motion.  I've never seen another set quite like it.

They sound gorgeous; would it be possible to post a picture?

I have an opal tennis bracelet I bought here many many years ago. It still looks beautiful and I know I didn't pay that much for it. It's not small either, I should wear it.

I have so many gemstone tennis bracelets that I never wear.

My mother was an October baby so she had a few opals and I've always loved them. They look like a starry night to me, filled with magic. I've never found one that had the brilliance that mom's had but, if and when I do, I'm buying. Never understood buying these stones online, it's one stone I'd have to physically see. @Pezzie ,I love the two triangle shaped pieces and the stone in the teardrop.
