On one of Joan's shows many years ago, she spoke about her mother who never wore her "good" jewelry, but saved it for special occasions. She said her mother also never used the good silver or the china & crystal unless she was serving company. Joan always told her, "What are you saving it for? Enjoy it now". After her mother passed away, Joan promised to wear her real jewelry and enjoy it every day. She unpacked her good dishes, silver and crystal and served breakfast on it if she felt like it. Very foretelling, she'd tell every one life is too short to save things for the few times you'll use them. QVC sold a piece of her costume jewelry that said DO IT NOW! After I heard Joan on that particular show, I took out all my pieces of jewelry that I kept for special times. After having them appraised and insured (I'm very practical), I started wearing my Grandmother's gold and diamond pin on my jean jacket. The 2 carat diamond necklace that was also left to me became my signature piece. I drink my morning coffee from a mug that matches my "company dishes" and my silverware doesn't stay stored in the wooden box at the back of the closet waiting for the holidays. We eat lasagna with it. I can hear Joan Rivers' voice sometimes when I dress in the morning as I clasp my pearls under the neck of my denim shirt. LIFE IS SHORT. DO IT NOW.

I like the way you think. You can tell yourself that you will leave your things to someone, but chances are they will never love it like you do. I like the pin on the jean jacket, I'll bet it looks chic.

@QVCkitty1 Thanks. It didn't happen all at once. At first I felt uncomfortable wearing "real" jewelry. I thought about my grandmother, aunts who didn't have daughters, who left me these pieces they loved. They'd be disappointed knowing they were in a safe not being enjoyed and cherished. I live a jeans and tee shirt life so I found a way to incorporate the jewelry into the way I live.

I love your post! Yes, I remember hearing Joan say those things. I also remember her having similar thoughts on dressing appropriately. She would say how no one dresses up anymore for the theater and on airplanes. That is so sweet that you think of Joan saying those words whenever you clasp your necklace on. I bet it makes you laugh each time. I guess I'm kind of guilty on the lines of what Joan said, however, not pertaining to jewlery but clothing. About several months ago, I purchased a pair of her leggings and was saving them (don't know why I was) and I just wore them for the first time on Thanksgiving Day. LOL! Now when I wear Joan's leggings, I'll think of Joan saying "wear them NOW." BTW, they are fabulous leggings if anyone is interested. Not sure if they are still in stock on Q's website since I purchasd them on sale. They are great leggings--soft and not skin tight fitting. They also have seams down the front of the legs which makes your thighs look slim. Yay for that! And the best part is they are on the thin side so they fit FABULOUS in knee high boots. .

I agree, I wear a strand of pearls , mostly large Tahitians almost every day.  Around the house, shopping at the hardware store etc....   If things get lost or stolen, oh well.
