I've had that problem with sterling silver earrings and took them to a jeweler and had them shaved down a little bit. That worked for me. I have had this done with at least two pair of earrings. One of them was a Barbara Bixby hoop, and I don't remember what the others were.

Oh yes, I've done that with two pairs of Barbara Bixby hoops. They were too thick even for me. Some of her hoops lately aren't well thought out as they have the "caviar" bumps going too far into the wire making earrings impossible to put on straigt.

I had my ears pierced by a friend of the family who was a nurse in a hospital when I was about 16 with a surgical suture with a little curved needle attached to it (this was about 1966, so this type of suture may not be in use anymore) He left the suture part in my ear, knotted & told me to clean with alcohol & turn it a few times a day & then in a week or so, I put in posts for awhile.
So, my piercings were never large & he had shaky hands & one hole was pointed off in a weird direction. It was always hard to put in earrings, so for many years, I seldom wore them.
Then, about 20 years ago, i bought some little 14K huggie hoops & figured I'd force them in, if I had to. The post part of the little hoops is about double the size of a post on a stud earring. Well, no amount of forcing, by me or helpful friends, was going to get them into the holes in my ears.
I went to a piercing place at the mall & they wouldn't touch me & told me I needed to go to a tattoo/piercing place & get the holes enlarged. The guy at the tattoo/piercing parlor put something thru the back of my ears & then, used a slightly larger thing over it to punch out larger (& straighter) holes in my ears & then put in my little new hoops & told me to keep them clean with alcohol.
They healed very well & I've never had a bit of problem with them & now, the holes are large enough that I can take out & put back in my earrings without a mirror, something I could never do before they got repierced.

My lobes are small and ears sensitive so I am very careful about posts on earrings. Some posts are too thick, some are shaped like a knife and not round, some have too much contour, some have a ball at the end. All of those I cannot wear because they hurt. I always look for a round post that is thin...then I might buy.

The only time I have purchased a pair with posts too thick to wear comfortably were a pair from Zulily. They were sterling silver; the brand no longer has items there (at least not currently). I guess I've been lucky.
I thought I was the only one with an earring obsession. I must have 300 pairs.

I didn't realize this problem was so common. I cannot wear the posts that are squared off. Only round posts will fit through my ear pierces. Years ago I bought a couple pairs of 18k gold hoops and had the posts filed off to be thinner so I could wear them. Eternagold hoops are my favorites because of the posts.

I have small ear holes from piercing my own ears. I just received my Norstrom cz earring from their big sale. I thought I would have to return them because they were hard to put in and were stinging my ears.
I remembered I had some Neosporin with pain relief and used a little on each post and the back of my ears. Now they feel okay. I think my holes have shrunken with wearing just hoops and wires for the past several months. I am going to try and get used to these earrings and wear them for several days to stretch out my holes again.

@cherry@Me Too. The lady at Merle Norman shot my left ear before I could chicken out!! Then she moved on to number two! Never a problem although my right one has always had a little tilt that can be tricky to get thru. I think I would have passed out with a needle. I sleep with earrings most nights.
