It is solid gold, as others have said, but it's not a lot of gold. It is just enough to be solid. I think they measure plated items in units of microns, while the gold on Barbara's pieces could be measured in fractions of millimeters. Think of barely visible microns to very visible millimeters in thickness as one difference. Either way, it's a thin layer, but the difference is in how thin. In the pic of the ring below - J292721, you can see that the gold is visibly affixed to the silver and it is a solid, albeit thin layer.

Barbara Bixby Sterling & 18K Peridot Leaf Design

I have lots of her pieces and I like the gold accents, but I realize there isn't much of it. I've been collecting about 10 years.

So I suppose the debate centers on the definition of "solid gold." Cue the dancers.

Honestly, this whole fan club idol worship mentality when it comes to jewelry designers completely puzzles me. No one is allowed to pull the curtain back from the Wizard of Oz without being tarred and feathered. The beloved designer walks on water and that's all there is to it. I've seen it with Ripka, Pollack, and now Bixby. It's WEIRD.

I think you misinterpreted my intent. I believe the previous issue had been whether or not it was a "thin" layer and objections were raised about the meaning of "thin". I suppose we could also debate the meaning of "solid" if you want to raise that issue too. If you consider that the gold is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons, then most of it is empty space and doesn't qualify as solid.

My point was that the gold is indeed "thin", and each person needs to determine whether or not that is acceptable. It is durable enough that the OP need not worry that it will wear off, which was her concern.

Please do not lump me with those whom you perceive as intending to 'tar and feather' you. Maybe you're having a bad night, but I have never been one to be critical of your posts, which you well know. And while there is some degree of 'heroine/hero" worship on these boards, being a long time collector as I have been means that I know the product. It does not mean that I mindlessly support everything that the designer does or that I can't critically evaluate the products or the designer.

not dealing with this poster

Hey Schnapsideen ~ I don't know what I have done to offend you. I don't believe I have ever posted with you before.......If there is an issue, I wish you would let me know what it is. Mistic

Hi,

Wasn't referring to you. Sorry if in anyway it appeared that way. Was trying to be helpful on the Bixby pieces. Look at the leaves in particular - whose are solid gold pieces. The beading is also gold.

Oh an you have to use SILVER soder to get gold onto a piece of silver jewelry.

Hey Schnapsideen ~ Thank you for responding to me. Sorry that I misunderstood. One of the rings I am interested in is her band ring with green stones and the leaves on it. It is my 1st born's birthstone. I appreciate the information.

Mistic - If you mean J292721, that ring is one of the favorites among collectors, and many of us have it in more than one color (it came with other stones a few years ago). Barbara designed this as a version of her wedding band, which was all gold and diamonds. She brought it back in peridot because it was a popular design. I think this would be a good choice. It fits true to size.

Re: Barbara Bixby Jewelry Question ~

I love the leaf design ring. I bought it a number of years ago in peridot. Although I don't much care for the gemstone, it's my birthstone too and in this ring it looks very pretty. Always wanted to add this ring in other stones to my jewelry box, but they discontinued it, which sort of surprised me, as it was always very popular. The reintroduced ring looks a little different somehow, and the price is certainly a bit higher, but is still so pretty. Would love to see them reintroduce the other gemstone choices or maybe add a few new ones.

You won't regret it! It is a WORKHORSE ring - when one is not sure what to wear, popping on one of these pretties is always a great choice. It's low profile, super comfortable to wear and very feminine and pretty.
