I grew up with fresh meats and vegetables. As a child, we didn't make chili.
I don't remember chili powder, red pepper flakes, or Texas Pete.
When I got married, I guess we started making chili, I don't recall, but I burn very easily with spice.
I was watching youtube on pot roasts today and almost every demonstrator added heat to the pot roast.
I keep Texas Pete for those that want it.
How much "heat" do you add and how often?

@ECBG Although I'm surrounded by chiles and jalapeños, I don't like "heat" in my food. I love the flavor of green chiles but not the heat so I always dive for the mild when buying my frozen chile. I'll have nothing to do with jalapeños. I think all the heat in food is influenced by the male ego.
You never hear "ladies who luch" bragging about how much heat they can eat.

I love "heat".....my husband not so much. It's good for you and supposedly can affect your metabolism! I keep the flame factor at a medium for my husband and go for the gusto with mine.... serve sriracha sauce so people can determine their heat!

More often than not I add heat to soups and chili always needs some heat--always has for us.
I like heat in popcorn, on boiled eggs, in salads and lots of things. We go through a lot of salsa at out house--mild or medium.
We have many kinds of salsas, hot sauces, and peppers. I put ground fresh pepper on almost everything in quantity! ![]()

The hotter the better for me. Many foods can be bland without heat and spices.

Sounds like a discussion for the kitchen or recipe forum to me... ![]()
That said, I like flavor and spice but not too much heat. I don't do well with too much red pepper...

You're exactly right! I was headed for "Kitchen" and apparently Shadow pawed me or something and I missed!!!![]()

I love spicy food but I do not brag. I make salsas every week and enjoy them by myself, my husband is not able to handle them.
My home is never out of salsas, fresh japeños, serrano peppers, dry chiles, onions, cilantro and tomatoes for my salsas. No jalapeños in a jar in this household.

My mom did not cook anything with spicy heat. She never bought fresh garlic until we started canning spaghetti sauce, which was after I married and left home.
My husband and I like spicy heat thru onions, garlic, hot Mexican chili powder, raw jalapeños, serranos, cayenne pepper, chipotle peppers and sauce, red pepper flakes, etc. We do not seek heat beyond a serrano pepper, and do not use Texas Pete for anything. At Taco Bell we ask for hot sauce and fire sauce.
If the level of heat forms beads of sweat on our forehead and makes our tongue and lips tingle, it's just right!

The spicier the better. Love heat in food and in my bloody Mary's.
