I have a Dyson..bagless. On occasion I take the canister apart and clean it --sometimes with a toothbrush. I do like the bagless vacs but do not like the fact that I have to take it apart to clean it.

I rinse out the filter with dish liquid and let dry about once a week. Less often I fill the canister with sudsy water and swish around. I wipe the base and wheels off after each use.
I always felt that the ones that used bags didn't contain the dust inside the bag only. Seemed to seep out into the interior of the vacuum itself. That's why I went with the canister models.

I take apart everything that can come apart.
There are quite a few parts in my upright.
There's also 2 filters.
I have a small, handheld canister Shop Vac, I've used it to vacuum out the nooks & crannies of my upright. I've never washed any parts. I don't want to have to wait for everything to dry or not dry properly.

I have a Dyson and a Bissell. both are uprights and have canisters that remove to empty them.
Both canisters, come apart by pushing a button. They can easily be cleaned out by wiping them or placing under the facet. Every so often I wash the filter and allow it to dry.
I will never go back to a vacuum that uses a bag. They are expensive and need replaced too often. I vacuum the first floor of my home very day...have two dogs and I like the fact that if I accidentally vac up something in error, I can get it out without tearing that bag all apart.

I have Dysons. I wash the permanent filters at least once a season. The inside of the dust bin I wipe out with a microfiber cloth or a duster. My husband will use the wet/dry vac about twice a year to clean out the the vacuum openings, etc but you can do the same thing with the dusting cloth. I have GSD's so we have dog hair, dirt, etc. This is what works for us.

I have the Shark Rocket. Every season I wash the filters w/soap & water & let them dry out overnight, wipe down the canaster inside & out w/a damp paper towel.
Never cleaned the brushes as nothing ever gets tangled up in there. All the dust bunnies as well as hell are sucked up into the canaster.
Cleaning process takes a total of no more than 20 minutes tops.
