Re: arghhh Ironing Board Covers

@Allegheny

I really hope you're pleased with whatever you end up with.  In my book, if you don't have a decent board with a decent cover with fabulous lining, all with be for naught.

The best ironing board we ever had was one that folded down out of the wall in a flat we rented when newly married.  It was a wooden board that came out of the wall in the kitchen onto which someone had tightly wrapped layers and layer of old sheets, topped with a cover.  Perfection!  Haven't had anything near that ironing board perfection since then and that was 1970-72.

Re: arghhh Ironing Board Covers

I still use an ironing board. I'm guessing that we have the same type because mine is so old but still in decent shaped.  I always find these types of covers at Altmeyer's.  BBB is my second stop. It does seem to be a "quest" to find these type of household items. I find it takes forever to search on line even before I run to a store. I have a steamer that I use for the drapery and fast jobs but I still have items that need ironed.

Re: arghhh Ironing Board Covers

I never realized ironing boards came in different sizes, well except for the small table top models.

I guess I always got lucky when buying a new cover.  I buy the cover only and being lazy, just put it right over the top of the old one.

That's what I do, too... looked the other day, I think I have 3 on my ironing board.. .just use those elastic snap corner sheet holders to keep them taught... they work pretty good for that...

@ptagirl

I took my old cover and padding off to wash, but the padding shrunk to half the size.  It was probably wool vs some kind of fiber and I didn't realize it.  I can probably still get the old cover back on and put some towels underneath it until the new ones arrive.

@Fressa  I might just pop down to Altmeyer's tomorrow to see if they have something that will fit until new cover/pad arrives.  Even though I ordered via Amazon Prime its not getting here until after 4/25.    I used to chuckle when my dad would get so upset about having a hard time getting the underwear he wore for years.  Now I understand.

Re: arghhh Ironing Board Covers

Amazon and Ebay are the place to go for those kinds of things. Change up your search vocabulary using other descriptors you find in similar or exact matches from other searches you did. This can broaden your search in a more specific terms. This can lead to an exact hit on what you want on your terms. It can also rule it out. I always pad my board with cotton batting, but I quilt and have plenty around. You can use cardboard cut to fit the base and put the cotton on top of that, so that it is firm but padded. If it shifts, you can always hand tack the batting to the cardboard and right through the grid of the ironing board. Some people also wrap the cardboard with tin foil to radiate the heat back up. We do a lot of dry ironing, so the steam isn't an issue. I keep two ironing boards: one for clothes and one for quilting/sewing. If I need steam, I spray the fabric with a fine mist water bottle. Remember to use natural fabrics when making an ironing board. I always use unbleached heavy muslin.

I do like the idea of using the previous ironing board cover as a pattern and even cutting the center out leaving the cinch string to attach the new one to. Makes for a quick fix. You can always use some of those fitted sheet corner clamps with the elastic to make sure it is on good and tight.

Re: arghhh Ironing Board Covers

@Allegheny  I purchased my ironing board cover a few years ago from Pottery Barn and it is really pretty and different.  I love it.  I also bought a different pattern in case I needed   I am not sure if PB carries any more but they sure did have a large selection of patterns that were very different from the average cover.  Cat Happy
