My husband has neuropathy so walking on hard tile floors is difficult for him - even with shoes. In our current home we have wall to wall carpet in all rooms except the entryways, bathrooms and kitchen. In our new house we will have tile everywhere except the bedrooms so we are planning to put in an area rug in the living room and one in the dining room. The lady we spoke to at the carpet store said that generally, you don't need a pad under those rugs as it would raise them up from the floor and be a tripping hazard. I asked about putting one of those rubberized pads under & she said they make it non slip , but since we would have furniture on it - it would not slip anyway. What we are planning on is a 12 x12 ft rug to cover a 15 1/2 x 15 1/2 floor. At one end the entertainment center would sit on the edge of the rug and on the other end the couch, plus 2 recliners and end tables.
What do those who have area rugs have under them?
I never heard of putting down a rug without any kind of padding.

An additional reason I'd like a rug in the dining room is so when people slide their chairs in & out from the table I'm worried it would nick up the tiles.

I don't think you do need a pad under a 12X12 carpet. The weight of the furniture will keep it from sliding. I don't have a pad under mine which is a bit larger, maybe 15X15 and I've never had a problem. I do have pads under my smaller area rugs in my kitchen on the tile, those are very slippery. The pads are very thin though so no raise in the carpet height, but it does the trick. I bought the pads on LL Bean. Best wishes.

We have room sized area rugs over hardwood floors in our living room, dining room and hallway. We have pads under them which are pretty thin, so there’s no tripping hazard. Our house is a rambler, so we walk through these rooms all the time. They keep the rugs in place without any added thickness. I think I got them at Tuesday Morning. In contrast, we have a 6 x 9 foot area rug over tile in our sunroom without a pad. While it doesn’t slide around, it does shift gradually over time despite the fact that we’ve got a fairly large ottoman on it. In view of your husband’s neuropathy, I’d recommend getting these thinner pads for your rugs.

I always put a pad under an area rug. We have hardwood floors and the rugs will slide just from walking on them, unless anchored all around the perimeter. But the primary reason is for comfort. Unless you are buying thick plush rugs you will need a pad to provide softness underfoot. If your husband has neuropathy he might appreciate more softness. JMHO.

@151949 We have a large area rug in our living room and do not have a pad under it. I recently purchased a new one and my only requirement is that the rug have a cotton backing because we have hardwood floors. Even without furniture on a large rug as you've described they probably would not slip and slide. Rugs are very heavy. I should add that wool rugs are very heavy, which is what I purchase.

At home we have Solarium vinyl in the kitchen and just as you describe “ nicks “ on the tile from chairs moving back and forth, we have dull tracks on the flooring from the stools.
In FL we have cushions under the legs of very heavy chairs at the table which sits on tile....no sound from moving them, no marks on the tile, and easy to slide under the table.
Found a very large wool rug at the Venice Goodwill...it is anchored on two sides by the sectional. It never moves:

@Anonymous: My post was removed because I put a company name. I thought that was okay but did not put a link name just a picture. That's not okay? I see all kinds of people putting fashion pictures with all of the description and place to buy them every day but allowed to stay? Double standard seems to me. I wish the moderators would answer my question.
Anyway, you need carpet double-sided tape along the edges of the rug. This will keep it snug on the floor and consequently no tripping.

If your DH spends anytime in the kitchen on tile flooring, he may be more comfortable with a rug there. My DH cut out the island area for this “ wall to wall “ wool rug. ( Found in the clearance area of a flooring store...reasonably priced )
