We have a Trane and didn't know until after we bought it that filter is a huge production to change. It is pleated and you have to thread it through the holder inside the unit. We have the guy from the company who sold it to us come out and change it as needed. I see people with tons of them in their shopping carts at Costco and envy them.

I buy at Lowe's or Home Depot. You get a *contractors* discount if you buy more than one double pack....

But first I buy a gift card for either store at a grocery store (this week at Giant, I get 4 times the gas points for buying a HD gift card. So if I buy a $100 Home Depot gift card, I get 40 cents off a gal of gas up to 20 gallons.) But my Acme will also give me 10 cents off 25 gallons for every $100 in gift cards I buy, for where ever I choose.....

Plus, I get double the points for using my credit card at a grocery store. So I can earn points for a Home Depot and/or Lowe's gift card to use to pay for the filters.

Then my husband gets 10% off anything he purchases at Lowe's or Home Depot using his military discount.

So it's a win/win.

But, it usually starts with a gift card.....very easy to purchase at the grocery store. In and out.

Dollars off gas, win/win.

Earning points for free gift cards which equals free filters in the long run.

Sounds complicated, but it's not!

Amazon had some Black Friday that I set up on AD. Amazon also sells their brand filters but most sizes are out of stock. I need to check out prices before my AD ships. I have been buying a Merv 11. Our AC guy told us to buy the cheapest filter we could get? I don't think so. I can tell a difference when using a cheap on vs one with a higher Merv? I did read not to use over the Merv 13 because it can restrict airflow.

The filtrete 1900 filters we were using are expensive. They say they are 90 filters but they don't last that long. We were changing them before 2 months.

We change the ones we buy from Amazon about every 6 weeks even though they say they last longer?

The frequency at which filters need changing largely depends on the environment where they are used. Dust, people moving around and about and pets bringing in stuff from the outdoors all shorten a filter's lifespan.

I change mine about every 4 to 6 weeks depending on how much the furnace is coming on which is more during the coldest parts of winter. Later on I can wait and change them closer to the 6-week mark but no later than that.
