Re: We are cold down South.......

I think there are also some misconceptions about those of who live in cold weather states. 1) We get black ice and it is difficult to drive on; 2) Although we have plows and sand trucks they are not an immediate thing that happens it can be days before they plow out the streets. 3) We have extreme heat and flooding and tornados and towns are wiped away with only a few minutes notice. And yes we find it difficult to be sympathic to others who complain about their weather. AND, we help each other.

Let's all agree that we all have weather issues and we just need to deal with them.

Re: We are cold down South.......

Hi retired08, it's me the one who is moving to Georgia from Arizona in 12 days and so looking forward to it. It's just like in Arizona everyone thinks the whole state is Hot and it is not. Different elevations, different temps. No one is prepared for unexpected weather no matter where you live. I lived and was raised in New York and remember the blizzard of 77. We knew there was a Winter Storm coming but no one expected what happened. People were stuck at school, grocery stores, the malls, the dentist. Where ever they were at the time it hit that is where they stayed. This was in the Buffalo area where they are used to and well equipped for harsh winter storms and still people were stuck in traffic. So my point is it can happen anywhere to anyone. Like previous reviews stated this was unusual for the south. Heck we lived in New Jersey and they too are not prepared for bad winter storms and close everything before a snow flake falls. Anyway can't wait to get to Georgia.

Re: We are cold down South.......

I live in PA where we have lots of snow plus below average temperatures this year. While I am used to driving in this weather, no one can drive safely on black ice!!!! Fortunately, we haven't experienced that here as of yet. I am sorry people are making fun of all of you. That is ridiculous and I wonder how they would handle a situation like this. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Hello Moon Dance,

Georgia will be happy to welcome you. I think you'll really be happy and on an even happier note, in 12 days the weather will be back to normal.{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Oh and you will be here in time for all the spring festivals.....you are just going to love it!

On last nights news Al Roker addressed the ""Atlanta had no weather alerts issued to them"". He showed the weather channel timeline. Atlanta was issued a warning a good 8 hours before the ice storm hit. Live and learn I guess.

That still isn't much time for a city the size of Atlanta. I saw Roker's critical assessment of the situation and thought to myself he should stuff a sock in it. I'm sure lessons have been learned here and hopefully that includes the national weather service.

Re: We are cold down South.......

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, Retired08. Growing up in Kentucky, I saw my fair share of winter storms. One thing that makes it different here in the lower south is that we just don't have the equipment to handle the snow storms. In Kentucky, the salt trucks would be out before, during, and after the storm. They also had big plows. Here highway salt/sand is not a part of the annual budget.

With this recent storm, I'm mostly disappointed with the school administrators. Our district waited until late yesterday to announce an early dismissal. Parents were scrambling around trying to figure out a way to pick up their kids. Teachers were told that they couldn't leave even though the students were going home early. I was told that my lunch break was canceled because of this sudden duty requirement and then I was told I couldn't go home. Today school was cancelled for students, but they expected staff to show up. I was shoveling ice off my driveway early this morning so that I could be on time for an empty classroom. I think it's unreasonable to expect teachers and custodians to go to work when they've deemed the roads unsafe for parents and buses.

Re: We are cold down South.......

Just be glad your weather got mentioned. Usually unless something happens in the Northeast, it doesn't get a mention on the news. The Southwest has been suffering a drought for over 3 years; not just a drought but the most severe classification of drought. How often do you hear that mentioned? Not a drop of moisture from Dec. 21st until maybe next week here. Driest January on record.

Thanks, Retired08! I am beyond excited! And, if any one is a Festival junky it's me. I have missed them so much. Feb. 10 we leave and will arrive on Valentines day. Yea! Then on to the house search. Thanks for the kind Welcome. I have heard nothing but positive when it comes to Georgia!
