I was a load of colored bath towels, hand towels and face clothes together with hot water and all free and clear laundry detergent but they never have a clean  smell.I have tried white vinegar and my wife hated it. But I tried downy rinse and refresh and that didn't work either. But I tried arm and hammer washing soda and load of towels come out clean and fresh. Glad I tried it. Any white towels hand towels and face clothes go with white clothes and I use bleach with them.I know people that say washing white clothes separately is  obsolete. They wash there whites with colored clothes.  I so disagree.

@Pooky1   LYSOL LAUNDRY SANITIZER is also a wonderful product.  I use it in EVERY wash.  It has a very light fresh scent.

Re: Washing towels.

[ Edited ]

Colored towels are washed together.  I have quite a few white only towels that I wash just by themselves and my lighter clothes are also washed separately.

I don't like getting lint from towels on my clothes.  Yes I do a lot of loads.

I have been using Nellie's laundry detergent and her whitener for years.  My laundry comes of smelling nice and fresh.  I rarely use bleach.  I have it on hand if I think that I need it.

After renovating the shore house, I took all the towels and linens home to wash since the washer there had a larger capacity.

The towels had that musty shore smell....when I took them out of the dryer, they smelled wonderful.  I used Tide free and gentle and white vinegar.  There was no off-putting vinegar smell at all.  Bonus:  the vinegar actually softened the towels.

I use All Free & Clear when washing everything.  I find my loads come out nice and clean always.  This detergent has no perfume smell, just fresh and clean.  I've never had a problem.

I like Percil and Gain (original) laundry detergent as it cleans very well too.  My towels and clothing come out with a nice scent.

I only buy white towels--so I bleach them when I wash them. I use Nellies too and I don't put any fabric soft sheets in with them either. I also wash my white cotten undies with a splash of bleach. and will wash them with my bath towels--- wash my kitchen towels that way too.-- I wash the kitchen ones separately. I separate out light colors from dark ones and wash them separately----jeans are separate too. My DD throws everything altogether---she washes a few pretty big loads. Drives me crazy as I separate everything--

Asways use the Lysol Sanatizer with towels.  Everything comes out fresh and clean.  I use laundry detergent from Dirty Labs.  It takes about a tablespoon to do a full load.  No soap residue.

I always use white vinegar as a rinse. I like my towels absorbent and fab softener doesn't do that. That don't smell of vinegar, either.
