I have two little throws I keep over the backs of the couches I'm getting ready to throw out because I think they smell even after letting them sit overnight, dry in an empty machine with a cup of baking soda before washing them and adding vinegar during the rinse cycle.

They get washed at least once a month if not more so I don't know why this happened.

I use All Free & Clear because I can't stand the overwhelming smell of scented detergents.  I think some of them are so strong that you can taste them.

Re: Washing towels.

[ Edited ]

This is the very reason I got rid of all colored towels, washcloth's, and all kitchen towels and only have white now.  I can bleach them when necessary with no problems.  Having all white also eliminated an extra load of laundry.

When I use a vinegar rinse I always give them a 2nd plain rinse to get rid of any vinegar odor.

I have white towels but I NEVER use bleach.  I use Nellie's and white vinegar and NO fabric softener.

They don't want them, hence throw them away because I'm not going to donate something I can't get the smell out of to Goodwill or the church thrift shop.

I have white bath towels and use Kirkland UltraClean in the orange bottle, from Costco.  It has a light, clean scent.  The Kirkland unscented version has a really unpleasant odor, imho, as do other unscented laundry detergents.  I also use OxyClean powder with my white towels and sheets, never bleach or fabric softener.

Musty odors can also come from front-load washing machines which is why I switched to a top-load washing machine.

@CelticCrafter  Since you plan on throwing them out, try ammonia before you do.

I know it's not a popular choice these days but see if it can remove the stank.
I use it when the towels seem to smell unfresh. It softens them up as well.

@nyc1   I just purchased this about two months ago.  I love the smell and now use it in every load.  Love this product.

@Pooky1   LYSOL LAUNDRY SANITIZER is also a wonderful product.  I use it in EVERY wash.  It has a very light fresh scent.
