Using marble tile for showers?

We are ripping out a shower and selecting tiles.

I did not know that (travertine) marble required sealing and is difficult to clean. Please share your experiences or thoughts.

Sorry, can't add any experience with this, but I'm jealous!

Would love to create a new bathroom on my second floor ~ just commode, vanity and shower..........

I'm sure you will receive lots of great info from our friends here on the boards ~ Good luck with your project!!!

Share pics of the finished room!

@granddi I have a travertine shower. They did not seal the floor.( because of of the slippery when wet factor) I use a natural stone cleaner. It’s 12 years old and still beautiful.

It's better to use porcelain over ceramic tiles in the shower or in areas where there is water since ceramic is more porous.

Porcelain is also same color through the tile where ceramic is not.

I have marble in my shower to the ceiling , Roman Style shower . Marble is easy to maintain , just wipe dry . The floor is porcelain and that does need to be addressed , just use a general cleaner and make sure to dry as you do not want mold to set in . My shower is two years old and I have glass opening with no door also dry completely . I am very proud of my shower . Congratulations and enjoy .

Re: Using marble tile for showers?

I love the look of all these fancy showers/baths that people are doing these days, but I'd just never. Too much upkeep, and my house is definitely not going to see a return on that investment. I'm perfectly happy with fiberglass. For us, the bathroom is more about function than beauty (and they are painfully small anyway, so only so much we could do anyway, it would look silly!)

Post pics of what you choose! Would love to see it!

I have a squeegee I use in the shower plus an old towel to dry it down. It sure makes it easier to keep it clean that's for sure.

Re: Using marble tile for showers?

@granddi   we just renovated husband's bathroom.  He had a stand up shower and it was ripped out and we put ONYX panels on the walls and floor to form the shower.  It's a very nice product.  It was expensive but I am not sure how it compares to anything else.  There is no caulk so we won't have an issue with mold or icky stuff growing between the panels.  It wouldn't hurt to have your contractor bid that product.  It's a custom product and they also sell the shower door...which is also very nice.

You can also go to the website and see what others say....easy to clean, and no maintenance.  He just uses a squegee after each shower and there is a product called Gel Gloss to use...I have yet to buy that product but will asap.
