SAG HARBOR SEA CAPTAIN'S HOUSE

[ Edited ]

Here's another look at designer Steven Gambrel, this time on the 'Captain Osborne Edwards' house in Sag Harbor, NY, on Suffolk Street.   What a neat front walk:

As always, I do like the restraint and meticulousness of Gambrel's design, and think it's a lovely house.  He elected to use pale blue-gray as a neutral all throughout, so I think you'd have to really like the color to like the house.  He warms it with wicker, sea grass, bleached wood, burnished leather color accents--  but, candidly, I'd like more contrasting color, myself.

Gambrel has almost made a trademark of mixing modern art and clean lined accents, with traditional, historical elements.

The thing I always notice about Gambrel, is his discipline as a designer.  He never goes "too far" with accessories, like I have a tendency to.

Subtle, comfortable living room.  I like that he sticks with such simple window treatments.  But how about some colorful pillows or throws, Steven?  (Ha).  He definitely has a more sort of "masculine" sensibility, I think.

Gorgeous kitchen, so in keeping with the house's historical origins.  Gambrel's use of natural woods is sublime.

This dining room could host very extended, agreeably informal dinner parties, with no sore backs from sitting on hard chairs, to interrupt the fun!

Dreamy.

Gorgeous stone, wood, window in bath.

A snug, ship-shape bedroom worthy of a sea-going schooner:

Even a "rec room" can be infused with history!

See what I mean about how "edited" he is?  There's 'just enough' in this vignette, no more.  I like the sophistication of the abstract print, right next to the sturdy "homeliness" of the oblong basket:

The house looks a lot more expansive, from the side:

Although slightly austere and too color-restricted for my taste, I find plenty to like.  Especially the bleached and reclaimed wood, the windows, the historical architectural details, all the nautical elements, all the fire-lit rooms, and most importantly, the sense of serenity and unpretentious comfort throughout.

This would be a perfect house to inhabit if you were convalescing from illness, say, or even just frazzled by all the demands of the outside world, and wanted to "breathe", relax, and regroup!

Ok; I LOVE this one.  Love the feel of it.  Love the window treatments.  Love the whole thing, inside and out.

@Oznell The ride up the coast of Maine into Acadia/Bar Harbor is loaded with homes that resemble this.  Of course I have no idea what the insides look like bu the exteriors are spectacular.

This house is gorgeous.

Love it!  The town of Sag Harbor is filled with sea captains homes.  It has a very New England feel as does East Hampton, Main Street.  I lived in East Hampton for many years in an area called Springs which is north of the highway.  Springs was known as an artist colony, writers, too.  DeKooning, Pollack, etc.  Sag Harbor was our first choice but we wanted some land which we found in East Hampton, 1/2 acre.  Both of these towns were very unHampton like and had a small town feeling and are steeped in history.

The house is lovely, I could move in immediately! I love the simplicity of the design and how it exposes the bones of the house. I'm mad about the front door lock plate!  Character!  Thanks @Oznell brought back beautiful memories of a glorious time when I lived there!

Love the house - outside and in, even though it's not what I'd choose for myself.  For one thing, there's no blue in my decor unless you count a flower or two on my daily china; for another, I'm not nearly neat enough nor organized enough to get my whole hourse done at the same time or to keep it so pristine.

Sag Harbor is one lovely and interesting community.  Wonder what that house looked like inside during the captain's life.

Very tasteful and well done.

My perfect version of a forever house. My feminine touch would be just to warm it up a bit more with very slightly heavier window treatments and a tad less blue.

Thank you for showing us such lovely images.

Re: SAG HARBOR SEA CAPTAIN'S HOUSE

It is a beautiful appealing home and I could easily see myself living in it.  But knowing my taste I would add some color also and more decor, not clutter but touches here and there and art work.  It looks like a relaxing serene place to be.
