MeMyselfandI - You have a nice outlook on the Halloween affair. The hi-jinks are rather extreme with the older minors. We were known for the house that gave out the most generous in the treats and the more costly candy - we got a lot of trick or treaters. Like Oostende wrote, folks aren't happy unless they are frightening the small children. We have several who actually dig graves in their front yards, also they hang the bodies and body parts from limbs. Red paint is splattered around to represent blood, and they do jump out of places to scream and frighten. It's just too silly. Some would build fires and fake they were roasting human dolls or body parts too. Not my ideas of enjoying the children.

Oostende - I don't live near your part of the country but the same goes on here in Los Angeles. We have the studios here and many talented amateurs that do the costuming and make-up (burns, scars, bodily gashes, etc.). I can understand your child being uncomfortable or traumatized by the antics of others.

Halloween is not the same as it was when I was growing up, in the 50's & 60's, it was fun back then! Not it has basically been turned into more of a Gothic/Vampire phase, than it was more fun back in the day! Ever since, people started putting razor blades in apples, and poison in candy, it took all the fun away, and most churches do their own thing for the children!

I basically do a Fall/Harvest theme which goes from Oct to Nov, I try to incorporate two months of decorating before Christmas! I do a late summer theme of sunflowers, which I have out now!

I like Halloween, but not the ghoulish extreme. I used to like dressing up as Cinderella when I was little. I remember lots of pirates, witches, ghosts. Also, other Disney characters, The Cat In The Hat, etc. I don't like the gory parts...especially effigies hanging from trees. But it's like everything else. Things have gotten more explicit and extreme over time.

I expressed my observations, experiences, and how I was raised to view the Fall season. Halloween was not the paramount event of that season. It is just not all that important to me.

Like I said it's too bad others spoil things for others, meaning those kids. You put it out on a forum so therefore anyone can express opinions or viewpoints. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they are battling with you. Others have a right to express themselves too and share knowledge, not just you. You did bring in Halloween in your post so common sense will tell you that folks who celebrate it will view it and comment on it. Anyway your posts are confusing, on one hand you talk about your house was the place to trick or treat and then say it's not all that important to you, or maybe it was at one point but the older kids spoiled it. You also say you participated while growing up...hmm ok whatever.

Anyway as with everything else in this world there are extremist who carry things way too far. But that doesn't mean it should be looked down upon altogether.

Maybe your post just should have been just about Fall decorating alone. I too like decorating for fall with a Thanksgiving theme.

ChristmasNut - Yes, others have posted who are Halloween observers but they don't imply an insult like you and another. Confusing? I think you just like to turn things around. I don't do the Halloween number at all anymore because it is my right to NOT do it. As to how I write my post, it's my business. Start one of your own - sounds like you need some excitement in your life first.

That non sense about putting razors blades in apples and poison in candy was disproved long ago. There has never been any proof or evidence that it ever happened. File it under "Urban Legend" But to be on the safe side no one excepts anything like fruit or homemade food during trick or treating. Of course all the treats are always examined. 's 60's was before my time, but Halloween was always fun during my growing up and it still is.

I decorate for Autumn. A few days before Halloween I'll put out holiday placements and a few holiday specific items. The day after Halloween I change them out for Thanksgiving items.

Another wonderful thing to me about Autumn is the food. I love to make hearty soups and bake my own bread in the fall.

I also love the apples. It's the only time of year I make apple crumble. The apples and the cinnamon and the oats and the fragrance that fills my house just makes everything feel so homey and wonderful.

I agree with Loves Roses about Thanksgiving, too. It is sometimes overlooked in the mad shopping rush to Christmas but my family gathers together and it is a very special time of year for us.
