Toilet Bowl Cleaner Question

OK, we've recently had a problem with the toilet tank and the plumber told us never to use those things that you drop into the tank to clean it because they cause slowly destroy the inner workings in the tank.

I've seen this type of cleaner advertised on tv that you "stamp" inside your toilet bowl and then it's good for a week. Does anyone know the name of that cleaner, and does it work? Or what do you use?
