The are for ambience and beauty, and if you plan to read or do other work, definitely supplementation is in order. I just bought a 54" three lamp chandelier for my new kitchen, mainly for the ambience over the table, as in that area no great light is needed.

I don't think it's the wattage of the bulbs that makes the difference. With the Tiffany lamps, it's that the shades don't reflect the light, so, although beautiful, not good for areas where you need to see well. Best to have additional lighting. I also find it to be a problem with other lamps that have darker shades like black, brown, dark green, etc.

Laura Duffek on ShopHQ is great. I enjoy her presentations of Tiffany-style lighting.

I have 2 Tiffany style table lamps that are rustic design.

Each uses 2 60w maximum bulbs with chain pulls.

With 120watts going I don't have any issues sitting on the sofa doing hand sewing, etc. The lamps are tall enough that I get enough light.
