Has anyone renovated their bathroom by using The TubCut?  Rather than spend a ton of money removing your tub and switching to a walk-in shower a company actually cuts a section out of your bathtub (24", 36", or 45")  where you step in and it becomes kind of a walk in shower.  You keep the section they cut out and it's reversible in the future.  You can use a shower curtain or custom glass shower doors.  We're getting it done at the end of the month.

Never heard of this.  Sounds like an interesting option if you don't want to spend the money for a replacement.  Let us know how it works out.  Good luck!

I'm aware of it and await your follow up post. My initial thought is that the insert won't fit properly so don't expect to be bathing in the tub. I do think it's a cost effective way to get a walk in shower without removing the tub.

For me this option would be a definite NO.

I want rid of the tub, period, so what money I will be putting into my bathroom update this spring will be to spend the money to get what I want, and what is convenient, do it right this time, and be done.

Isn't the cost about the same if you just got what you really wanted done? A lot of these kitchen & bathroom "shortcuts" or jobs that either cover or slightly alter the existing rooms can cost the same as ripping it out & doing it right once you get a final bill including labor & materials! Plus down the road you'll inevitably need to "fix" or replace the shortcut job you had done. So in reality, it will cost much much more than just doing it right the first time!

Notorious are home sellers or flippers who will do quick cheap fixes to sell the home that might look ok to someone who doesn't know to go over the home with a microscope!!

Looking at the picture @Desertdi posted I think it looks nice enough.  If done professionally why wouldn't the piece fit back in?  They have those walk in tubs with the doors that open and close for older people to get in and out easily.    Obviously they have a way to seal them.

Regarding walk in tubs, the contractor who does all of our work does not recommend them.   He has installed more than a dozen within the last 5 years, and has already been called back to 7 homes to remove them and install handicapped accessible showers.   Several of the homeowners that still have the walk in tubs are only using their shower feature, because of the door leak, and they can't afford to replace it with something else more convenient.

Everyone likes the idea of walk in tubs until they start using them.  You get in, sit down, and have a substantial wait for the tub to fill with water.   You bathe/soak, and then have a substantial wait for the water to drain out.  The door gaskets wear out quickly and you're stuck in the tub waiting for water to drain out, while water is leaking all over the bathroom floor.
