Re: Swanky Living Room

[ Edited ]

I like it too, @lolakimono & @IamMrsG!

And Lola, "swanky" is the perfect description!

As far as the room being dark, IMO, sometimes dark can be nice!

In my old house, even though it had a wall of windows, the dining room was always dark because of a huge maple that blocked the light. Plus, it was an 'in-between' room.

I tried all kinds of colors in there, hoping to brighten it up, & nothing worked - until I decided to embrace the dark!

I painted it indigo - just like the walls of this room, then added gold & crystal. It was beautiful & everyone always remarked on it.

As a matter of fact, my DIL now has an indigo dining room because she liked mine so much.

Ahhhh... yet another nicely appointed hotel room...

To @stevieb and others who have said this, please expound.  I ask for explanation with no intention to imply or stir up anything, I just don't get the connotation.

Is the ‘hotel’ description meant to be negative because the room doesn’t appear ‘homey’ enough?   And, if so, what defines “homey”?  If a home is clutter-free but is filled instead with good furniture, art, lighting and balanced design, is it less comfortable, less inviting?

The idea confuses me.

Edited to fix wonky spacing.

@IamMrsG Hey there... For me, the room is a very handsome, stylized room but with very little heart or soul. It looks like everything came right off the floor of the design center and is a bit bland and predictable. While it's true there's nothing particularly 'homey or 'cozy;' (as I define them) that isn't even the issue. The entire room looks like it was chosen to fit a specific mold. Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of predominately contemporary interiors, but the big factor for me is the room doesn't look as though anyone actually lives in it... It just has that model apartment vibe... It's hard to explain differences in aesthetics, but hopefully this explains my take on it a bit better...

@faeriemoon and @stevieb

Thank you both for your explanations.  I suppose it is true that beauty (in this case, creativity, personality) is in the eye of the beholder.  I went back and studied @lolakimono's photo with your observations in mind; however, I failed to see it through your eyes.

The personality I see behind this design is quiet dignity with an appreciation for order and symmetry.  In all lifestyle formats--room design, fashion, even dining--creativity gets imitated until the market is saturated and a fresh idea is needed. Gray seems to have become the au courant wall color and wood for flooring.  For now.  For all we know, the designer of this setting might have been a forerunner.

This is what I meant when I thanked Lolakimono for bringing the fun back to these forums.  Sharing differing opinions, thoughtfully considering each other's views, without the use of one-upmanship or thinly veiled insults, is a very nice change.

It's very attractive, not quite cozy enough for me though.
