Suggestions on Sheet Sets

I'm looking to purchase a good set of sheets. I've gone through the reviews and what I see is - the lower the thread count, the better the reviews. Can this be true? I thought the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet. What am I missing? And, can I get some recommendations from those who have purchased sheets from QVC?
