from prior threads, it seemed like these posters bought speed queen washer/dryers in the past few years. can you help me ?
i get alot of good info on this board and based upon the positive feedback here, i told a relative to consider it. she excitedly received delivery this week of the manual dial models.
BUT: the new units are giving off an odor while running- like maybe a new electric heater might, an 'electric' smell- some of us are sensitive to that and in spite of an open window and fan- the odor is a problem for her. it still continues now after trying the first few loads. she will be calling speed queen, but i thought maybe some 'real world' experience might help.
for any buyers of these units, in the past few years -
> did you have no odor while running the new units?
> or did you have an odor like this at first? when did it go away?
[ chemical coatings or plastics in wiring can smell at first use. some new things, like a toaster oven or space heater, i may have to run in the garage for some time, to allow that electric smell to 'burn off'.
but some things don't improve enough for me- so i feel for what she is going through- she can't move the w/d out of the house to see if running it alot will help. she doesn't know if this is 'normal' for this unit.
some of us get terrible instant headaches or breathing issues from this, so it is a real problem.
i am really sensitive to this, and a w/d is not the usual type of new appliance we have ever had problem odors with, so didn't anticipate it. tho mfrs can change things they use over time.
hoping for other's experience with speed queens. thank you

I bought my Speed Queen washer in 2015 and have had no problems with any odors. I would be calling Speed Queen too. Hope she can get the problem resloved.

Never had that experience with my Speed Queen pair. Call Speed Queen and the merchant from whom she purchased the unit. This sounds really weird.

I purchased mine in 2016 but never smelled an odor brand new or anytime. Good luck to them on getting this resolved.

My Speed Queen washer and dryer are 8 years old. I have never had a problem of any kind with the motor or with any unusual odor. When I run king sized quilts or blankets through it, I stay close by to make sure all is well, but I have never had a problem. We had ours installed professionally, because my husband was in a wheel chair at the time with a broken hip. We have since moved it our selves to install a new floor and paint the laundry room No trouble at all when we did this. Everything is still working perfectly. I would definitely call Speed Queen. Something doesn't sound like it's running properly. Please post your findings so those of us with Speed Queen units can be aware.

@shosh, I do have a Speed Queen washer, but not their dryer.
I do not remember smelling anything like something electrical or something getting too hot. There may have been a slight oily and rubbery "new" smell at first (think mechanic/brake shop smell but light) but it is long gone.
Please let us know what happens with your relative's machines.

I just used 2 new Speed Queen Commercial Washers. They said they were installed earlier this month.
Am I impressed! The only smell I could detect was the smell of scent from the dryer sheets.
I liked these washers! So much better than my Westinghouse. The clothes cames out clean and NOT WRINKLED! I regret buying my Westinghouse earlier this year.

I purchased a Speed Queen washer with the electronic control pad about 5 months ago (thanks to all the ladies on here who posted great things about Speed Queens!), and it's never given off any kind of odor. I agree your relative should call Speed Queen customer service. They are very helpful. I called before I bought mine to ask a few questions, and I actually was able to talk with a knowledgeable person!!
