@Bri369 - I'm not listing our house till I've closed and moved into the new house, which will probably be January. (So far, the new house has only the foundation poured. Framing is supposed to start this week). I will probably list it the day I move or a few days prior. And, yes, the current fridge will fit in the new house. Thanks for mentioning that.

I guess you can wait and order the fridge you really want. If for some reason, it's delayed and you won't have it by the time you move in, you can take your old fridge with you.

3 years ago, we bought a French door with the freezer on the bottom. It's been fine. It's just too big for my needs now.

I went to Home Depot yesterday to do some casual looking and I'm thinking about going back to side by side.

The salesman said the shortage of refrigerators is easing up a little. He suggested waiting for the Black Friday sales to shop for one.

Do you freeze larger size items, like freezing ice trays with left over chicken / beef broth, leftover fresh lemon juice or small portions of pesto or other semi solids or liquids? I use the larger flat area in my pull out freezer drawer in my french door refrigerator, couldn't be without it. Side by side too narrow for me for my purposes. We also have a door within a door that allows partially opening the refrigerator on one side with immediate access of your favorite items.

@rockygems123 - no, not at all. I really don't cook much and live alone. I have one pack of chicken breasts, frozen personal sized pizzas, bread and some frozen meals in the freezer now.

That amount and size of frozen foods really opens you up to any size, no wonder you are considering your options! . I also saw you're considering counter width, that will look really nice.

I've had a few different fridges in my lifetime. With almost all of them, there were issues I grew to dislike.

Currently, I've had a counter depth French door fridge, since 2016, that I'm still in love with. It's an attractive fridge with plenty of upper shelf and door space, with a nice size bottom freezer, that items don't get lost in.

Of course, it's a family of two here -- me and my dog, but I've tended to stock-up more during the pandemic and I always have plenty of room for more.

I've had side by side for the past 25 years. Tried a French door model for my Mom and we hated it. The bottom compartment lets a lot of warm air in every time you open it, and a design flaw was causing something in the back (sensor?) to become coated with ice and malfunction. I got tired of the service calls and we ditched it. Will never buy that style again. Might go back to a top freezer model some day, but will have a side by side for the foreseeable future. My current frig is 11+ years old and still working like a champ. Only one service call for the icemaker and that's it. It's white and doesn't match the rest of the kitchen but I'm keeping Old Faithful for as long as I can.

It's just me and my husband, and I have a side by side...the freezer is small, but we also paid a premium for countertop depth...which means it is less deep that a 'traditional' refrigerator. My kitchen is small so the counter top depth was important to me, and the sales person told me I would not notice the difference in size...he was wrong - It is smaller. Next purchase I am going to consider something different.

This house had a side-by-side in it when i bought it in 2006 that had been put in by the builder when it was built 3 years prior. I hated the side-by-side, as I couldn't even put a turkey in the freezer side. After a couple of years, I replaced the side-by-side with a GE Profile French door & really liked it.

The original appliances were bisque color & as I replaced stuff, I should've gone to SS, but I tried to match what was here, which became increasingly difficult, as almost no one makes bisque appliances anymore.

Last Sept. , the over-the-range microwave died & the dishwasher had been acting up, so decided to just bite the bullet & replace everything with new KitchenAid SS appliances with a locally owned small chain of appliance stores.

The microwave was the only thing they had in stock at their warehouse & were able to deliver & install right away, which was good since it's what was dead. The DW came in Oct., the gas range in March of this year & the 26.8 cu French door fridge finally came in June.

Now, I'm dealing with delays on parts, as one of the burner assemblies on the range has a manuafacturing defect that makes it not work very well on low/simmer-it sputters & flutters. The repair guy was here in April & the part finally came in & the tech will come this friday to install it.

It has been an "adventure"!

Considering the small amount of food you probably buy for yourself, I would just buy a regular refrigerator with a top freezer.

For years we had a top freezer model. When our fridge needed to be replaced, I liked the water and ice in the door, so we went with side by side, which I LOVE and just replaced that one to update it was so old.

This time we got a Samsung and it has been beyond wonderful! Our range, 2 yrs old is Samsung as well. Samsung sends their trained tech's to service you!!!

Also remember, if they are having such a hard time getting the "chips" that go in cars, chips for advanced.

features like a tv built into the door may be difficult to get.

I would go, find what you want and see what the wait is.

I wanted a sise by side refrigerator-freezer that would allow me to defrost a 25 lb turkey and still have room for weekly groceries (which would be replaced by pies).

@gidgetgh The most important part of a refrigerator is the inside and how it is organized. I saw a commercial on TV where you were able to store a gallon on milk on the door which I thought was an excellent idea.
