Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

I would not wait to purchase a new refrigerator until it completely dies.  At the very least, you should narrow down the models you want now so that you can order it immediately when you need it.

Mine died the day after I went shopping for my Thanksgiving ingredients.  My sister had also shopped, so she had no room for my stuff, especially my turkey.  I had to keep it in a cooler and had to go to the store and buy ice 3 times a day to keep my ingredients at the right temperature.

I was fortunate that I was able to buy one from a local appliance store and they delivered it the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Larger stores take longer to deliver.

A repairman gave me some advice about buying any appliance. He said to get the one with the least amount of features and that way there is less to go wrong.

I agree with this. The less "digital" the better.

I was just reading @151949’s thread about everything breaking and now it seems to be rubbing off on us.

I think our refrigerator is getting ready to bite the dust. My husband came in a little while ago and said it didn’t look like it was working correctly. I went into the kitchen and the temps on the door for both the refrigerator and the freezer were definitely too high. But then, on its own, it seemed to start cooling again.

We’ve decided that if it dies, we’re going to replace it.

Anyone buy a new one lately that you love and would recommend?  Or any to advise me to stay away from?

@gidgetgh  What GE said to me when mine did this was to unplug it and let it defrost.  They felt that ice had built up because the motor was starting to go and manually defrosting it would give the motor a rest and buy me a little more time.

[ Edited ]

My choices are limited as I need a 30" wide and it has cabinets above, so my height is restricted as well.

I'm not remodeling my kitchen for a refrigerator.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

If you have room, I recommend getting a backup refrigerator.  If space is an issue, a smaller one will at least tide you over until you get another full-sized one.

While I was trying to figure out which fridge to buy, I got a small one that looks like an oversized file cabinet. It has a separate freezer section that holds about a weeks worth of food, automatic defrosting and works just like a regular sized refrigerator. It is made just as well too.

I will never be without some kind of extra refrigeration again.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

We went today and bought a new refrigerator. It’s being delivered on the 31st.

We’d looked at it a few weeks ago at Home Depot. I had taken a picture of the model number and we went back today, looked at some others in addition to that one but I still really liked that one. Then we went to Lowe’s and looked. After awhile, they kind of all blur together. Anyway, they had the same model that Home Depot had.  We narrowed it down to three and then went with our original choice.

It’s a Whirlpool French door, fingerprint resisted stainless steel. 25 cubic feet which is just a tinch smaller than the one we have now.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

@happycat

I learned about using the brush to clean lint from QVC --- I bought the brush from them. Best Purchase.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

Check about price adjustments at the store you bought it from because there should be Labor Day Sales coming in the next week.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

I hope my ‘appliances’ story is as helpful and less costly to others as it turned out to be for our family. When we remodeled our kitchen 5 years ago, I decided to go with the GE Cafe line. (If it was good enough for Oprah’s favorites list it was a no-brainer.)  Cut to 2 years in. The side by side refrigerator, basically, flooded my kitchen. I’m not overly extravagant, but not heartbroken either, bc I’m convinced side by sides are where food goes to die and is never seen again until the science experiment is complete! I got out my original brochure and there is the GE Cafe armoire frig with bottom freezer. Eureka! We are good to go and so far, so good! Cut to 2 more years in and the microwave and dishwasher are both DONE. . . at the same time! I have a repairman out with no bias towards any brand, just the dreaded ‘looking at his watch to declare time of death’ spiel explaining both computer boards look to be shot, and replacing is our only option. (They don’t supply the replacement. They only repair, so he wasn’t trying to sell me anything.) Trouble is bc of fierce Santa Ana winds here in So.Cal it seems all the money on our trees out back had blown away! And we are talking a couple thousand dollars for these 2 “designer-type” appliances. $900+for the built-in microwave alone.😬) Well, I’m no computer wiz but I am stubborn enough to pretend I know more than the repairman and, as it turns out, I did. I fixed both myself. The microwave, by sheer luck, and the dishwasher with common sense. I pressed enough buttons on the microwave that some combination caused it to reprogram itself. It has been working perfectly for a year now. (A fluke but a “free fluke” so I’ll take it.) With the dishwasher I got under the sink with a flashlight (the repairman never did that) and found that the electrical cord was crimped by the pull-out drawer, blocking all power. Just glancing you could see it was plugged in, but a closer look told the real story. I unplugged it, straightened the cord, and cleared it out of the drawers way. That, too, was a year ago and it has not quit since. No idea what our next brand will be. Really hoping it’s a few more years down the road, but I may start saving for Sub-Zero now. 😉

Repairman said he gets more call for them than any other brand.  He suggested Maytag, or Whirlpool.  He is an independent contractor, so sales pitch, info based on his repair experience.

Those who have Samsung’s and love them kindly do not beat on me.

@Drythe- we have a Samsung!  It’s never given us problems and is 11 years old. But I’d already made a decision a few years ago that when the time came not to replace it with a Samsung.

I didn’t even know that Maytag made refrigerators.

@Drythe the Samsungs made 11 years ago are not the same ones made today. They are garbage, mine lasted three years. The repairman said the compressors are too small for these fridges and they go. The smaller compressors are used to make them energy efficient.
