Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

I would recommend AVOIDING Samsung and LG.

The consensus seems to be avoid the water/ice dispensers in the door to avoid a host of problems.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

I just purchased a French door Whirlpool with ice /water in the door. I chose this brand because of all the terrible reviews of Samsung and LG.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

The only thing Samsung is good for is TV's love their TV's. Had the Samsung fridge it wasn't too bad just noisy & I also think ice makers & water always break first no matter what brand. We love the ice/water lines so that is the chance we take. Appliances don't last long anymore. If I can get 12years out of any appliance I think I did great. Just read reviews before buying but even that isn't reliable either. Repairmen are expensive too. I just figure out the age of the appliance & if it is worth the cost of repair person to come out or replace it with new.  Sometimes I don't know.

Stay away from Samsung...my 2 year old fridge (piece of cr##) was already replaced for bad compressor after 3 months ...replacement was missing foil shields ....30+ calls to finally get it fixed...

This new saga ....ice maker completely encrusted in ice and stopped working AFTER both the fridge and kitchen floor flooded...

Called told NOT ice makers Are Not covered by extended warranty (or original 1 year "limited" manufacturers warranty).   I will be calling them everyday until I get resolution.....

Its a piece of JUNK!!!

I let salesman talk me out of Frigidaire (or Whirpoll) which I originally wanted ....guess he made a better commission on this overrated, overpriced junk🤬🤬😤😤😤

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

@homedecor1- Check your state's consumer laws.  Some states (like mine) have an implied warranty law that covers things like appliances (and most other things) for four years.  The implied warranty overrides any manufacturer's warranty.

Your State Attorney General's office should be able to advise you.

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

A repairman gave me some advice about buying any appliance. He said to get the one with the least amount of features and that way there is less to go wrong.

I agree Samsung makes great electronics and phone, but NOT appliances.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Our current refrigerator seems seems to be happier today so we’re keeping an eye on it.

We did stop at Home Depot and looked around, avoiding LG and Samsung. The Kitchen Aid was really nice (they only had one model) but it was $1,000 higher than most of the others.

We found a Whirlpool that we liked.  I took a picture of the tag so I’d remember which one it was. It was on sale.

Side by sides, like we have now, seem to be just about obsolete. They had only one or two on the floor. So we concentrated at looking at French door with the freezer on the bottom.

I doubt that we’ll voluntarily buy a new refrigerator. We’ll wait till our current one dies, which I thought was going to be yesterday.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Refrigerator recommendations?

[ Edited ]

My 18 year old refrigerator finally bit the dust so I had to buy a new one.  Well, the appliance landscape has changed completely and not for the better.  After reading many, many reviews, I never found any brand with consistently high ratings. There were horror stories for each and every one of them.  And a lot of the problems involved water lines, ice makers and dented or damaged products. I also learned that all the different brands of refrigerators are made by a handful of companies.  So basically smoke and mirrors for the consumer.

The two brands I did not want were LG and Samsung, mainly because they are relatively new to making appliances and there were complaints about finding technicians to service them.  So I bought a counter depth, GE French Door model. I selected this brand and model because it was one of a few that would fit through my narrow kitchen door, and it was available from a small, local appliance dealer. I did not hook up the water line or ice maker because there seem to be too many problems with these features.

My old refrigerator was a side-by-side, so this French Door design takes some getting used to. The overall quality is also not as good. The storage bins and door shelves are the type of plastic you would find at a container-type store.  The whole thing reminds me of a super-sized microwave - only for cold stuff.

This has been quite an experience. Oh, for the good old days, when all I had to consider was whether or not I liked the look of an appliance and working properly was a given.
