Number of threads depends on mesh size. 14 mesh means, if you make 14 stitches wide by 14 tall the result would be one one-inch square. So you would probably use one strand for this item. Do a test in a section outside of the pattern. If a few stitches shows too much open space between stitches, try two strands. Needlepoint can be very relaxing and rewarding, so enjoy.

Thank you @LiveLaughLove . That's what I'll do.

For cross stitching they want you to separate the strands and then lay them flat next to each other so that they aren't twisted when you thread the needle.
I personally find it to be a wasted step because they don't stay side by side for very long once you start stitching.
Some where in the instructions it will tell you how many strands to put back together to use.

@NickNack --I used to needle point and I used wool hanks that you had to separate into 2 or 3 strands. Loved needlepoint and was self taught--have many things I am going to get blocked and framed. I started out with a kit that had everything in it with a printed design. then graduated to using a pattern and stitching onto a blank canvas then on to petite point, which is very tiny stitches.

@CelticCrafter I've completely read the instructions three times, but I'll read it again. I really don't think it tells you.
Edited to say: I found it. See next post.

@LiveLaughLove @wagirl @CelticCrafter @Still Raining @Love my grandkids I'm pretty sure I figured it out. On the diagram/chart page it has a legend. It has a section that says Continental/Backstich and beside that it says (strands). It looks like I will use 6 in most places and 3 in a few places.

@NickNack Oh that's great! I wasn't much help, I haven't done needlepoint in 40 years. The piece you are doing looks very very pretty.
I hope you'll share a photo when it's done!

Yikes, better instructions.
Looks the bottom section of 3 strand is actually a mix of two colors for 6 strand total???
Look section 16 on the first post.
More votes?

@Love my grandkids Thank you. I think it looks pretty, too. I was kind of just considering this a practice needlepoint to get started (it was only $10), but I like it so much that I'm going to try to make it nice and neat. I'll definitely share a photo when I'm finished.

@Still Raining Yes, I think it looks like it's two colors, too.
