Re: Quest for better cat litter

I wasn't going to post because I didn't think I could without shedding tears - my Jerry cat died this morning. I was up all night with him and I don't think I can go through this 13 more times. I have 8 cats left and 5 dogs. I am sort of numb.

But, anyway, all of my cats are indoor cats and I use Tidy Cat Litter. I tried others but Tidy Cat is the only one that keeps the order out of the house.

I do have a system to keep used litter smells away: I use a Sterilite box about 12"H and 7"W then I put one plastic grocery bag in followed by a Hefty Order Block kitchen bag and then another plastic grocery bag. I scoop the used litter into the 3rd bag and loosely tie the bag and then I twist the Hefty bag, put in my scooper and then put the top back on the Sterilite box. I use the same bag for the entire day and throw out the used bag daily. I change out the Hefty bag about every two weeks. Visitors can't believe I have 9 cats because there is no lingering order - unless someone just took a big you know what! Gail

Re: Quest for better cat litter

Dear gailchap, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you so much for taking the time to write out your method for a litter box and keeping things clean. I am so very sorry that you are suffering over Jerry's death and the fear of losing any of your other pets. I've already said a prayer asking for comfort and peace for you in the following days.{#emotions_dlg.wub}

Thank you.....our pets are like children to many of us. I feel so bad that I couldn't call the Vet to let him know. I'll wait until tomorrow. Thanks again for the prayers. Gail

Re: Quest for better cat litter

I bought a box of the clump and seal a couple of weeks ago but haven't tried it yet. After trying the light weight tidy cat and having dust everywhere I'm leery of trying another litter. I'll be interested in hearing what you think of the new litter.

Re: Quest for better cat litter

My cat (Jack) likes to play in the yard during the day (when it's warm). He comes inside for lunch and for dinner (snack). I was worried about him using a littler box in the house because he was used to going outside.

He stays inside when it's cold out so I had to figure out how to get him used to using the litter box in the house. I read up on people with similar problems and came up with this idea. I realize this isn't for everyone but if anyone has a similar problem this might help.

I bought potting soil and mix it with 1/2 cat litter (to help absorb the urine). I change the entire thing 2 times a week and clean it every day. It works for the two of us.

The weather here (in Va) has been very cold these past few days so he's been inside. I'm exhausted from entertaining him (he's 9 years old but is in great health and has amazing energy. He likes to climb trees and I tell him "he runs like the wind".

Anyway, I thought I'd let you know how I solved my problem. My vet thought that was an excellent solution for Jack. He's known Jack since he was born.

Re: Quest for better cat litter

I buy regular arm and hammer clumping litter for rick. It didn't seem like it had alot of dust in it. I have hardwood floors at the top of the cellar stairs and cleaned them yesterday and today there were paw prints. I saw the other kind, I think it was in a purple and black box.

Rick is a tall cat, so I can't use a litter box with a lid or one that's short in length. I have 2 Rubbermaid storage boxes that I use for litter boxes. I used to be able to buy big litter boxes, but couldn't find any the last time I changed them out. They give him plenty of room.

Re: Quest for better cat litter

I'm sorry that you've lost a best friend gailchap, our pets mean so much to us and its hard to lose one.

I wanted to say that I like the litter that's made from corn cobs and also the Tidy Cat crystals (silica gel). We have 2 cats that are in and out but not so much with this cold we've had. I kindly wish that I could stay in as wellSmiley Happy
