@GCR18 wrote:Good job Susan. You have to get into the mindset and you are half way there. My taste in decor changed over the last year. I bought a handful of new items this year that made me take stock of what I have. Storage space isn't a problem, but I don't want to have more than can fit in the designated area. My winter goal is to cut back the decor by 1/4. I want to be able to see everything at a glance.
Can't part with my valerie square mg pedestals, love them. I use the brown and champagne often. The round ones with the mirror on top can go.
@GCR18 @Susan Louise I understand that we all have different items that fit into our spaces but our goals are the same, to reduce the overload. It was such a hassle for me to decide what to use to decorate this year so I have stuff everywhere, what I used and what I unpacked but didn't have need for. So now it's almost time to pack up and I'm determined it won't all go back into storage. It's way colder than it should be so hard to work in the unheated garage this week but hoping to next week. I do hope we can be better this year than last in the buying vein, me anyway, for sure.
@GCR18, I love those square pedestals too but I have those, round ones, plain ones, sets of three all in several colors, plus ones from other places. I have several sets of clear glass pedestals from other stores, numerous other types of pedestals. I have to ask myself how many does one woman need. I've lost my mind with pedestals. I recently got Jill's Hobnail pedestals, H215228, in cream to use with the cream Magnolias and the Bronze ones too. So, I have to part with some of them but not my Valerie square ones.
@lucymo Those square pedestals are wonderful for your home! You have great large spaces and a fabulous diningroom table to put them on. If we had your home I wouldn't get rid of them either.
You have quite the pedestal collection. I remembered seeing Jill's hobnail ones but chose to get VPH's Cardinal/wreath ones instead...the ones with the ole' stink eye I had to fix...LOL
I was going to use them this year but chose the plain white ones for either side of the tv instead. Funny how I totally forgot about them til now, so I bought 5 sets of pedestals this year...not just 4. Feel comforted in knowing you are not alone in pedestal madness! So getting rid of the 6 sets of 3 MG ones and 2 sets of 2 sets of square MG was quite liberating.
Overall my pedestal collection is down to 8...2 natural, 2 white, Cardinal/Wreath, and the 3 sets gold/silver/chocolate of the MG with the inserts....a fairly reasonable amount to be able to change decor out without being overwhelming. I figure I also have the set of 3 VPH trays in white and gold which serve the purpose of lifting/changing heights so absolutely plenty of options in that category!
My wreaths are down to just 3...that is HUGE for me! They are H212754, H212806 and from 4-5 yrs ago the H203453 which I still love and use the tree from the same set often.
I have also found that by taking pics every year of the set up of all the decor from season to season, I have an easier time of letting go of some things. I keep them all organized by year/season in a folder on my desktop making it easily accessible too.
For example, having a pic I took of when I decorated with the large Dicken's Caroler's cloche, it helped me to let go of all 3 of the cloches. Even though I never used the church cloche, having the great small white wooden church this year which I love (and see myself using for many years) it became an easy purge.
As you mentioned, we all have different things to purge, but I hope I gave you some ideas on what might help in the process of letting go. Truly, taking pics is really great because it allows you to still see the piece without taking up prime real estate
@Susan Louise Well, I've been asking myself the question, 'when is it too much of the same thing", and I've decided that the pedestals are way over the reasonable limit so some have to go. I also have one set of the ones with the beaded fruit spray on them that Jill brought. I've never liked them so they will definitely go to a new home.
Yes, you have helped me a lot by telling what you purged and it didn't hurt you too much so I can do it too. I really think we all enabled each other to some degree. But I'm just stiffled by too much baggage that isn't being used.
@lucymo For me, I have a relatively small window of time I can purge. I have to do all I can with purging now before I start washing walls, cleaning shelves/glassware in the livingroom and shampooing carpets...overall house cleaning next month. Then it's time to sow seeds and start the gardening mode process. March I start feeding the Robins, both March and April I'm outside prepping gardens/yard...May gardening and it's the start of hummer documenting for the Spring migration, etc.
I know there are folks that are able to fnd time to purge a little throughout the year, but I just can't seem to find that extra time. I seem to be also able to focus much better when Spring/Summer activities are off my plate, which also extend through the documenting period of hummers during the Fall migration too.
I had made a couple of trips to charity around the CIJ period, but VERY late Fall through December seems to be the best months to purge for me.
I was thinking of maybe keeping up threads that had purging to help maintain the motivation for folks throughout the year with everyone updating their progress and giving each other support
@Susan Louise The purging threads might be a good inspiration for a lot of us. I am busy in spring but more so in fall and winter due to social and church obgligations. But, one day or so along works for me too.
Stay warm, this cold is wicked and widespread.

@Susan Louise When I first saw the green plates I thought they were chargers. They are such a beautiful glossy green and will work back to lots of patterns. Sometimes I just buy a couple of plates for DH and I to use because we get tired of using the same ones. I'd buy those green ones if I saw them.
My goodness, you really did purge the dinnerware. It's funny how we just go wild over a lot of things and then after awhile, the clutter gets to us and we move a lot of it out. I've reached that point. I suffer Vertigo and can go for days that I can't do anything much but I'll get it done before Spring arrives. I'm motivated.

Yes, very cold...it's -8 here now with wind chill hovering in the -20's.
Funny, I went to post on another post of yours in this thread and it went 'poof'...SMH You posted 3 times to me. This is the 2nd and there is one other...

We'll see if I can clear this house of so much baggage. I had a tough time of deciding what to use this time for decorating because there is so much. I just want to trim it down to a more managable size in storage.
I cannot buy decor in 2018. I can buy new sheets, towels, comforters, dish towels, rugs and the like, which I don't need either, but no decor. Wish me luck. LOL
I'm wishing you all the luck in the world! And looking for some of my own.
I have no business buying any thing you listed (and a whole lot more), and I'm going to give it some real effort for at least the first quarter of this year, then see if I can keep that up through the second quarter!
We need a 12 step program!
I appreciate the backing in my quest for a clutter free home. I just lost all of my reasoning and bought something everywhere I went shopping. I wonder if 12 steps will be enough, we've been at it for a long time. Worth a try though. lol
I don't need anything right now but do love to change out comforters and towels. I usually end up with mostly white towels in the BR, just seems so clean looking.
I'm on the hunt for a new LR set, sofa and love seat. I know what I want but will probably have to order it . I did that last time. Picked my style and fabric and ordered it, took about six weeks to get it.
We can still watch Valerie and chat about what she shows but don't have to order it. I'm sure enough people will order that the forum will be active without me adding more to an already full home and storage.
I know it's cold there in Ohio as it is here. This is such crazy cold and dangerous weather. I feel so bad for people who can't afford to heat their homes and especially those who live on the street in every town. Hope they find a place warm to sleep and get some food.
We have a benevolent fund at church and many are needing help for their energy bills already. Stay warm and healthy.

I'm looking to buy a new LR set, sofa and loveseat. It will take awhile as I most likely will order it so I can get the style and fabric I like. We've had the set we use now for a long time and it's still in good condition but just tired of the fabric. See, I'm in the purging mode. lol

@lucymo I can't tell you how much better it feels after getting rid of the excess dinnerware. Funny how I was fine having just the one set I bought for 75% off over 30 yrs ago. Looking at dinnerware patterns and aquiring them became so addictive. Even this last year I was good in comparison to the past few years...only getting those pieces at P1.
But still, the madness needs to stop!
I'm going to be filling up more of my 'extra' time reading books that keep being put on the back burner. That should help with browsing sites when I shouldn't be like Pinterest...which then leads me to retailers...oh how it all snowballs...LOL
Taking walks is another idea I had. When the urge comes up to check out things...time to go for a walk. That would definitely be more enjoyable by mid-February when the birds start migrating. I'll go to the nearby parks and go on some trails. I usually do that anyway, but need to go more often!
I'll still watch VPH shows, like you and most others, but I know there won't be any buying.
As for your new furniture, enjoy the hunt for exactly what you want. And post a pic of it...would love to see the fabric! ![]()

The town nearest us has for the first time I've ever heard of, opened two warming centers over night, one of them even taking pets.
I know these exist in many places, but we never had them here that I ever recall hearing. Both are in the downtown area where we see most of the people who appear to be homeless.
They are offering food, water, cots and blankets, and blankets for the pets to sleep on as well. I just hope the people who need it will get the news (hopefully the police will let people they see on the streets know about it) and get to the shelters.
It bothers me that there are people who have no where to go and have simple heat, running water and a little food every day in their lives, and in weather like this, it is almost unbearable to think of. Regardless of how or why they ended up where they are, it really bothers me to drive through the downtown area and see people sleeping on a bench under some blankets in this weather.
I hope every person and every pet finds a warm place to wait out this nasty weather.

@Susan Louise We all get pulled in to buying this or that and I think Pinterest should have a warning sign on the home page. I want to make a lot of things I see on there too which adds to the baggage.
We'll be fine. May have to allow ourselves one purchase during CIJ though or we'll suffer severe withdrawal symptoms. lol
I can find lots of things to do instead of browsing online stores and buying if I just do them. Also, if I reduce the amount of stuff I have in storage it will free up some time and space. I'm on a roll. ![]()

@Mominohio Oh, I agree the shelters are wonderful to help people who have no means to help themselves. I hope people learn of your town's shelters and go there during this awful weather. And, winter has a long time to go so this may be a problem for some time to come.I pray that it moderates soon.
