I was at the At Home store this morning, and bought a cute pumpkin about 15 inches wide and 12 inches tall, and has written in cursive " Eat, drink, and be cozy" It is so very cute BUT it is a white pumpkin with black lettering, and I would like to put an orange 'wash' on it, but don't know how to do that. Any suggestions?? There is a lady in our town that paints, but she would charge $25 to do that, and I could do it if I knew what I was doing!! Thanks!! It is a flat pumpkin, not a shaped pumpkin.

Re: Painting (craft) question

You would need to put a clear orange glaze or shellac, anything opaque would obliterate the writing, or take it into a Micheals or Joannes and ask them

Re: Painting (craft) question

A wash is just watered down paint....the more watery, the weaker the color.  You can experiment on a paper plate until you get it just right.  There are different ways you can apply it.  You could soak a wide sponge brush, start at the top and let it run down the sides.  You could lightly "paint" on the color all over.  What id do is buy a natural spongecat the craft store (used in pottery-making) and lightly apply by pressing the sponge to which you've applied some paint, all over the surface.  I like the texture of the sponge.  Use acrylic craft paint available in the small bottles.  Youll have a brief window to wipe it off before it dries, then it's permanent.  Play around on your paper plate until you get the look you want.

Before you start, test the writing to make sure water won't remove it.  If it does, spray with a clear varnish before painting.

Re: Painting (craft) question

Thank you ladies, Kachina, you answered my question about using acrylic paint, and the sponge is a good idea. Smiley Happy
