Re: Packing up a cluttered house....

I think I could have the house ready to move out of in less than a week (in my younger days I know I could, lol), as for hubby's garage/workshop, that would take him months, lol. I have been purging/donating for a few years now, with the thought in mind that at some point in the not so distant future, I want a smaller, one-level home, on a smaller property. Too much work to keep it all up in shape.

And the moving companies.  Sometimes it doesn't pay to try to do it yourself.  Sometimes you can't do it yourself.

The Salvation Army trucks, a big garage sale and the movers (we hired local movers and did it in a number of small trips, and they packed a lot of the stuff) are what got us into this house!

The movers weren't really that expensive and we just put what we didn't move in the garage as we moved, put up a sign and got a permit and people PAID us to take it away!  What about that?  Woman Happy

Re: Packing up a cluttered house....

It would take me a long time to pack up our house. When my sister and her husband were getting ready to sell their house a couple of years ago, she said it took her 6 months to get rid of all the unused or underused stuff they’d accumulated over the years. She found some stuff from when they moved into the house that had never been used. Did I learn from her experience? Nooooooo.

Re: Packing up a cluttered house....

Would it take me long to pack and move?  I'm about to find out!

When I moved into my current condo three years ago I downsized considerably due to the fact that I have no basement and very little storage space.  I have considered it a plus to not have any spare space because I know that my "stuff" expands to fill the space I have.

The condo I am buying has a full basement and the owners are moving because the single woman owner married and husband moved in and all their "stuff" together is too much.  The basement is packed to the gills, as is the two-car garage that doesn't have room for a car.  I don't envy their move!  I know my move will be a lot easier and quicker, but I am already filling up boxes at an alarming rate.  You really don't realize how much stuff you have until you have to move it all!

I agree @JYWilliams . It isn't the clutter, it is the size of our house and having 38 years of family living. I think that is why I will probably use an Estate sale company when we deside to down size. Let someone else do it for me. No yard or garage sales, just get it done all in one swoop...hopefully!

Re: Packing up a cluttered house....

When my daughter came home I showed her the house. She liked the outside and the neighborhood. Then she saw the first inside view.  All she said was "Why?"  She said there isn't a clear spot anywhere.

Oh, she had 2 grandfather clocks, one in LR and one next door in DR. Although they were beautiful they took up a lot of room with all the other things in each space. Oh, in the screened room of the back of the house there was a probably 5 foot metal brightly colored chicken.  Yep, a chicken.

I hope they sell it and find someone to help them pack up all of her obviously loved things.

Re: Packing up a cluttered house....

Nope.

We've moved four times in 36 years and each time we move we take less stuff with us.  Piece of cake - I can be out in a week, no problem.... if I didn't take DH with me.  He still has way too much stuff in the garage (he's working on it).  If it were up to me, it would all be trashed or donated.

OP----I have to pack up my whole house to move while major recon is happening. Had a huge tree fall on my upstairs and destroy the whole roof. there are  6 rooms on that floor and then the whole downstairs needs to go  as there is some damage too. It will be about 2 months for the recon. We have lived in my house for 33 years this Oct, so there is alot of stuff. all this won't start til June prob, due to weather conditions but as soon as we get a timeline, I am getting my ducks in a row and will start packing and purging. I shudder at how much work moving is!!!!!

@wagirl

I am so sorry to hear about your house! This is so devastating, and so much work. And unfortunately, the timeline to get things like this done just adds to the frustration and stress. I wish you the best with all you have to deal with right now. I truly can't imagine.

Re: Packing up a cluttered house....

I think I'd rather be shot than have to pack for a move right now.

As anyone who follows the declutter thread knows, I've been on a journey to move a lot of things out, but honestly it comes in waves.

I feel a big part of my problems (but certainly not all!) is the fact that my young adult son hasn't settled down in a permanent home yet (only 22, so renting and moving still in his future for a number of years yet), and I have a lot of his things, especially childhood things (toys books etc.) still here. I'm not desperate enough to just throw it all out (or donate it or sell it) because there is so much great stuff. Lots of great books, lots of great toys (good stuff like Lincoln Logs sets, and other 'old fashioned' non electronic toys that are like new and ready for the next generation). I always feel if I was free of all his things, it would reduce the 'stuff' here by about 25%, and make a big difference.

I have a possible kitchen renovation coming up this year, and if it happens, I expect to unload a lot of stuff, because I will actually be loosing a bit of cupboard space with the plan we are looking at.

Minus the kid's stuff, I still think a pack for moving would take 30 days, and that would be really pushing it. My husband and his shop, oh Lordy, that would be a whole other story!
