I'm thinking of having some employees over tomorrow night for an Oscar party. It could be up to about 20 people. I don't want to go too overboard as this is a last minute thing. I was going to pick up a couple cases of champagne and wanted to do something easy food-wise. Does anyone have any good ideas that have worked for them in the past for short notice events like this? Just so you have a frame of reference, the guests are professional, Broadway actors, so it's not really a cold-cut crowd. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

A large bowl of fresh shrimp with sauce...stuffed portabello mushrooms (stuff with cheese spread of your choice and top with some diced tomatoes...bake approx. 30 minutes at 350...various sliced vegetables with hummus dip...fruit and cheese platter...garlic bread, sliced in serving pieces...Voila!

Enjoy!

Smoked salmon and creme fraiche on cocktail toasts or cucumber rounds

Boiled shrimp over ice with cocktail sauce or remoulade for dipping

Home-made parmigiano crisps

Spiced nuts

Some nectars to mix with the champagne for those who prefer a sweeter drink.

These are all great ideas, thank you! I just returned from the market, and I have a plan. I picked up 4 dozen raw, jumbo shrimp which I'll roast in the oven, peel, and serve in a large bowl of ice with a smaller bowl of my favorite cocktail sauce (Ina's recipe) in the center. I picked up 2 large containers of homemade hummus (roasted red pepper and edamame), a big bag of pita chips, and a crudité platter. I bought 2 bags of shredded cabbage and carrots which I'll use to make my great uncle's mayo-free coleslaw. I have the advantage of having 2 Corky's Barbeque restaurants within miles of me, so I went in and picked up a large portion of pulled pork which I'll serve with slider buns. I went to the bakery and picked up a cheesecake and a carrot cake for dessert. Lots of champagne, wine and soft drinks. I'm going to prep the shrimp tonight and make the coleslaw right before the party, so it's crisp. Tonight I'll also set up the buffet and bar tables, etc. Am I missing anything?

I want to come! Your food sounds wonderful and I bet your friends are a lot of fun, especially at an Oscar Party. A lot of insiders?

Thanks, I'm sure it will be fun. They're a talented group. No insiders in the movie business in this group, just lots of Broadway vets.

I don't cook anymore and when I did I wasn't all that great. However, I would like to tell you that I listen to Entertainment Weekly on XM Radio and they were talking about Oscar Parties.

Someone on there gives especially elaborate parties every year. They were bragging on him because he gives the dishes he serves names of this years Oscar contenders (both actors and movies).

I don't remember the names but it was very clever. One was something that incorporated the name of Cumberbatch (like little sandwiches). Anyway, it was very clever.

I'm sure there's something along those lines on the internet.

I like that you are doing that. I think it's neat that people take the time and are interested in doing things like that.

Good for you.
