Change the heavy fireplace and I'd love it. Prefer a crisp, modern look.

I like the space.  Generally I like mixing old and new, but there is something about those lucite chairs that I really don't like.  It's like the the room isn't old enough, and the chairs aren't new enough to make the look work.

 

I also would rather see the fireplace either flanked by a couple of upholstered chairs, or a large family table placed in front of it.  The permanent island could be replaced with a furniture-type island which would help alleviate the wonky feeling of the room.  It just feels like that fireplace, as is, is in "easy to be ignored" territory.

Yeah, something about that fireplace doesn't really jell with the rest of the area, when you see the space in it's entirety.

 

Field stone fireplaces don't go with more modern and sleek, in my opinion.
