I am considering a 12 x 24 vinyl tile for my laundry room. It gets constant foot traffic and dirt because of the entryway off the garage. The laundry room is sandwiched between the garage entryway and the kitchen. We have hardwood in the kitchen. The room is roughly 50 square feet. Any advice from the decorators out there on the size of tile? Is a 12 x 24 tile too big for a small room?

@qshpr89 : Large tile= less grout, which is really good in such a high traffic area. If you like the tile, then go for it!

I don’t think so. Why don’t you buy five or six tiles and lay them on the floor so you can decide for yourself. Most big box stores will let you return the tiles if they doesn’t work for you.

I don't think it's too big.

When I tiled a 6x8 small bathroom, I chose a small/medium tile. The owner of the tile and carpet store came to my house to measure and he said a larger tile would look better.
i was hesitant, but figured he saw more tiled rooms than I did and went with his advice. I held my breath because I was scared I wouldn't like it.
He was right. Large tiles make a small room look bigger too.

My flooring guy tried to get me to get huge tile in my bathrooms.
I have a townhouse. My bathroom (wall to wall) is 4.25 ft wide. A 24" tile made no sense to me as there would be about 2.5 tiles at the widest part.
We did lay the larger tiles on the floor and he agreed with me that it looked stupid.
Their whole stance is "larger tiles make the room look larger." Maybe in a decent sized room. But a tiny bathroom, it did not look right.

I went with 12 x 12 tiles and I think the scale is perfect.
Previously I had vinyl flooring in a "tile" pattern and they were 4x4 tiles. So this size was definitely better than what I had.

I like the larger tile in a neutral color. I think it will make a small space look larger. If it were me in a large traffic area I would pick either a light sand or light grey color. I'm not sure if you have windows or what the wall color and how much is actually exposed but you might be able to use a dark slate grey tile on the floor. Usually you can get a samples to bring home and stare at for a few days. If that is not an option then just purchase one 4x4" ceramic tile in a few colors and use that. It's an inexpensive way to avoid a bigger mistake. I actually think that when it comes to a mud room that you have more options with color, etc. No matter what you pick it seems to work with the room and blend a bit better than first thought. Don't stress! Go with a color that you like if you can't decide.

You can buy single tiles at Home Depot/Lowes, if you want to buy a few in different sizes to see how they look.
You can probably return them when you are done with your experiment.
