I put Formica in the kitchen when we built the house in 1981 and stuck with Formica when I updated 7 years ago. So many patterns, I had a hard time choosing just one, but no regrets with my choice. No regrets as far as not going with a more expensive choice.

I have granite countertops that are 25 years old and look like the day I put them in. If I were to redo I would do granite again. You are allowed to have the best you can afford no matter your age. Also think about resale value.

@sarahpanda ...... Quartz is wonderful, however, porcelain is cheaper than granite, quartz and marble. Looks beautiful too.

I put on off white Corrian years ago. DS, the builder says "change to granite or marble."
I say "Why, I LOVE IT!!!"

We had quartz installed last year when we remodeled the kitchen. The saleslady was pushing granite.
Nothing wrong with laminate. Had it for years. They have some neat designs. Get a price for it plus quartz & or granite to see the price difference so you can make your decision.

I have a linen colored Corian with a sandwich black color in my kitchen. My appliances are black. Seventeen years later it looks like new. I also chose a beautiful sage green with flecks of cinnamon for the master bathroom. My vanity is natural cherry. Both look lovely. What sold me on Corian was that you can buff/refinish them in the event they get scratched.
I have a custom made granite dining table in the kitchen. It is lovely but I don't think I would pick granite for countertops.
I think you need to hit a few kitchen places before you make your decision. There are so many choices and you need to know which one speaks to you. Good luck and have fun! LM

Formica in my kitchen has lasted many years but as far as I know you can't do formica with an under-mount sink
and I wish I had that feature

I''ve remodeled 5 bathrooms. Two bathrooms I used marble countertops and the other 3 quartz. The quartz is my favorite. I really wanted to change my kitchen from granite to quartz but it's not possible without damaging the cabinets and the way everything was just done in general. Don't give up on quartz if that's what you really want. Shop around. Some places have remnants.

Have granite at home since 1996: the number of chips from dropped dishes and glasses are numerous. Never again.
When we redid the shore house, we chose Formica and love it. As other posters have said, it has improved tremendously:

OMG!!!! Never will I EVER choose laminate for anything!!! Had a house full of it--on the cabinet fronts in all rooms and in a shower and on the counters!!!! Hate the stuff no matter how good it looks-- I would go with a quartz counter top but not marble or granite---
