You're not the "odd man out",  @jubilant -- I like that beautiful wool rug also.  It's a beauty in and of itself, and looks luxuriantly soft, to me.

 

I remember your affinity for this palette too!

 

With the antique Asian rugs of old, they were often in shades of burgundy, red and blue, that wouldn't necessarily tie in with the other decor that homeowners had.  People would fall in love with them, or inherit them, and use them regardless.

 

With this one, with its rusty hue, there are a few rusty tones in the room that it repeats-- the rich frame on the painting, the various wood tones of furniture which would tie in. You could even add a solid pillow or two, or a throw, in cognac, rust or terra cotta, which would be yummy...
