@Catty2  I agree 14 years is a decent lifespan for ab appliance today. I like GE and whirlpool products, they have always served me well. LG and samsung may look cool, but, I have had to many horror stories told to me about unrelaibility and then unable to get the problem solved.

We have a Tru Value Hardware Store in my town that also sold GE Appliance until last year.  They had a small stock and delivered twice a week.  I was able to get a refrigerator and a dish washer in a couple of days.  The larger places you have to order and get on the delivery schedule.

They went out of the appliance business after 35 years at the end of last year.

We have a Maytag appliance store in town and they are also the local Speed Queen dealer.  They have a large warehouse of stock.  I bought both my SQ washer and dryer there with next day delivery.  My oven that I ordered a few months ago had to be ordered from Maytag because I wanted a specific model that they didn't carry.  It took a couple of weeks as it had to come from a different regional warehouse.  She said if it was at the local Maytag regional warehouse it would have been there in 2 days.

@kivahI know!  Been there done that -  lots of luck repeating anything near 24 years with today's appliances.  You'd have to be one of the lucky ones who gets a way above average refrig.

BTW-  it can happen.  I keep reminding my sister who often tells me that she didn't do much on a day that she has raised the average age to which women in our country live.  She's years above average!

I have a 4 or 5 year old Samsung French door refrigerator that has been an absolute dream. I got the most basic model...white, freezer on the bottom, no icemaker, no 3rd drawer, etc. and I love it! It's extremely quiet, too.

@vermint

smart move -- most complaints across all brands is the ice maker dies!!!

I'm getting great at filling ice cube trays ... something I hadn't thought about in years as my other fridge(s) all were over 20 years old ...no problems🙂

We recently got a new LG, freezer on top, model that I like very much.  It's the 'black stainless', as my appliances are all black, so it goes well with them even though it's a bit lighter.

I'm not one for an 'icemaker' so I packed that up and put it out in the garage.  I prefer having the space and use so little ice, as I drink mostly bottled water all day long.

This refrigerator is really super nice.   I could not be more pleased.  The reviews were good.

Oddly, although the size is almost identical (except an inch or to in height), the capacity is so much larger.  It's beautiful, quiet, and I hope it lasts like my previous one (Maytag) did.  We had that one for 18 years and it still worked fine but my husband decided that the compressor was going out.  When the weather was hot you could hear it running (not loud, just from the kitchen) and somebody told him that meant the compressor was going out.  Guess what?   New one makes that sound when it's really hot, too.  That's the way it is, but I decided to pick my battles.

I did manage to get him to buy this one, instead of the Samsung he was looking at and was a lot more expensive.  I don't mind paying for quality but, unfortunately (and I generally like Samsung as a brand), the reviews on the one he had chosen were quite bad.

I was also pleased that you can still get a 'freezer on top' model, as that is my absolute preference.  I don't like the narrowness of the side-by-side or the bottom freezer of the French door models.  We actually have one of those out in the garage and it's just like having a tiny (very!) chest freezer.  Hard to find stuff and restrictive for space.  That one is larger than the one in my kitchen, too, and I can easily fit twice as much in the freezer on top one.
