Yes, everywhere.  I got bitten twice.  I am bait.  Not sure even spray would help me.

Where we live there are so many geckos - they eat mosquitos, so you put up with the geckos to get rid of the mosquitos. At least geckos don't bite.

Those bug zappers do attract the mosquitos but they do kill a lot of them.Best to keep them as far as possible from the house.

When we are camping I put Off on all exposed skin as soon as I get out of the shower in the morning and leave it on all day. The OP might want to try that. Just a light spray of it keeps them off you. DEET is really the only insect repellant that works.

@World Traveler  Great post with interesting information. This year is high with West Nile already. Imagine they are collecting specimens for carriers the disease. How fortunate you are to have the trap located in your yard!

Thanks for educating those men on your DynaTrap and experience with it. Please post again in November if you find out their results of the traps. I have no idea where you are located, but would find it fascinating. Nebraska has had one case of West Nile, although I'm unsure of what part of the state.

Those of use with lawn services have few (if any) problems with mosquitos. We've used a lawn service for granular applications in two homes for 38 years and never had issues. The chemicals are child and pet friendly. Most importantly, I've never used those nasty  chemicals on our bodies.

DynaTraps work really well if you follow the instructions and leave them running all the time. If you just turn them on before you go outside, they aren't effective.

Thermacells are also very effective. Refills are harder to find locally, so I use the Off Clip-On Fans, which are the same type of device and are available in my grocery store. Friends of mine are in a Shakespearean theater group that performs outdoors in the evenings during peak mosquito hours. I always bring an Off fan with me and sit it next to me on the bench seating. I've never come away with a mosquito bite.

The one downside of the Off fans and the Thermacells is that they're only effective when you're not moving too much because they build up the repellent in the area they're in. As effective as they've been for me sitting in a theater, they did NOT work for me when I clipped one on my bag and was walking around a park for a few hours. They're great for picnics, concerts, and sporting events if you're a spectator with one sitting near you or a few set up around a larger picnic area to create a perimeter for multuple people. If you are walking around or hiking, they don't work and you'll need to apply a DEET spray to your body.

@patbz  Don't you have snakes?

@nyc1:  I'm not in Hawaii or Paradise, so yes we have snakes (but not in my yard except one,30 years ago, DH found a large "Mojave green rattlesnake" that turned out to be a garter snake).

We have wetlands in front and back of my home.  EVERYONE in my area is complaining about the mosquitos this year.  It's worse than ever.  We get sprayed each summer by Mosquito Squad.   This is our 3rd year.  They spray all around the outside of our home,  bushes, grass, trees, go into the wetlands to spray.  We are able to enjoy our yard with very very few mosquitos, who are only  present in the evening.   Mosquitos LOVE ME,  and this is the only way I can consistently enjoy my yard throughout the summer into the Fall.

We literally have more mosquitoes in our back yard than there are people in North America.  We are swarmed as soon as we step foot outside!  It's a nightmare trying to let the dogs out!   I've seen the Dynatrap presentations here on the Q and even saw them at Costco, but now when I look at the reviews, they are terrible.

Does anyone have a mosquito solution that has worked for them?  My concern with the bug zappers is this - wouldn't I be attracting even more bugs than I already have?

We would prefer not to douse ourselves in chemical DEET just to step outside for a couple of minutes, but we are running low on AfterBite & calamine lotion!

   All suggestions welcomed!

I moved to Georgia two years ago.  Mosquitoes can get bad here as you can imagine.  It's very common here to have a service come to your house and "spray" for that,  Our service is called Mosquito Squad.  I know other places like Arrow Exterminators has the service too.  I do recommend it.  I've noticed when we are out, especially at night in the pool and such, we don't get bit.  But, if I take a nice evening walk (which I don't do anymore because of the mosquitoes), we do get bit A LOT!

A little off topic but I have suddenly gotten very sensitive to mosquito/bug bites. A couple of days of a strong topical steroid will take care of them. I read that the bracelets really don't help.

The bracelets have helped me in the past, one on an ankle and one on a wrist. I have a sensitivily as well and my bites swell up and itch like crazy.  I have found tha I can control the itch with baking soda and water, a paste (just enough water to make the baking soda stick). This is only something you can use while at home in a stationary position (watching TV for example).Smiley Happy

Has anyone tried planting citronella or lavender near porch/patio or deck areas to see if it's effective?

Some reviews say yes others say no.
