The mixed flooring may or may not be the way you decide to go, but it really isn't necessarily that weird or unheard of. We have pale neutral carpet in our great room, but there's a hardwood traffic-way along the the rear of the room where people walk from the (HW) kitchen across the back of the great room and into a (HW) hall. The carpeted great room also transitions to hardwood as you enter the breakfast area off the great room and the kitchen. It doesn't look odd and has worked out well.
I've seen rooms where traffic areas or different use areas were in tile and carpet, carpet and hardwood, brick and hardwood, stone and hardwood........the possibilities are many. It's a matter of personal taste and good design.

We put hardwood in the kitchen when we remodeled, and we have plexi-glass cut to size under our refrigerator, just in case it leaks or scratches when we pull it out to clean. You can't see it unless you know to look for it, but it makes me feel better that it's there.

I have hardwood floors in my entire house, including kitchen and baths. Looks beautiful!

I am about to put hardwood floors throughout the entire downstairs, thanks to a flood that started on the second floor, collapsed some ceilings, and ruined all the carpet downstairs. I can't wait! I think the hardwoods will look great in all the rooms.
I'm also getting a kitchen remodel while the house is a mess!

That way they won't scratch the floor and you can easily move the fridge and stove to clean under them. I didn't use the large movers - more of a medium size - so you can't see them from the front. I have them under my washer and dryer too and other large pieces of furniture. With them I can move things like my heavy bedroom furniture by myself for easy cleaning or when I want to redecorate.
I did the same............but if you think your idea would work, give it a try.
