Mixing Flooring

Has anyone ever heard of combining two different types of flooring in one room? I think it would look silly but we are having HW floors put in the LR which leads straight out to the kitchen. He wants to go straight through to the end of the kitchen but to the left is all of our appliances and he does not think he wants to put the stove, refrigerator and cabinets on the HW floor. I said that's a silly idea. Thoughts anyone???

Your instincts are right, sparklestar--it is beyond silly! Why on earth not? Our cabinets, stove and fridge are all on our wood floor. Tell him form should follow function in design, and since there's no logical reason, it would look absurd!

Thank you. He made me feel like I didn't know what's what. I want to put in tile or lineoleum in the kitchen because it's very old. I think he's just lazy and does not want to move everything.

I have had wood floors in the kitchen forever. Of course, they can get scratched, dented and water-damaged, so you have to take some care, but I can't imagine two flooring types within one room as you've described.

I saw a very sharp looking kitchen floor that was ceramic tile with wood between the tiles, all on a diagonal. That may be a good option for you.

Just leave padded furniture movers (big box stores have them and they aren't expensive) under the feet of the appliances. That way they won't scratch the floor and you can easily move the fridge and stove to clean under them. I didn't use the large movers - more of a medium size - so you can't see them from the front. I have them under my washer and dryer too and other large pieces of furniture. With them I can move things like my heavy bedroom furniture by myself for easy cleaning or when I want to redecorate.

Our downstairs is a pretty open style, so when we decided on hardwood, it's from the front door to the kitchen. But it depends on how your kitchen is laid out. I would have preferred travertine in the kitchen, but there was no separation from the family room, dining area to be able to make it look right.

As far as putting appliances on the hardwood, we've had no problems and it's been down for six years. You do have to worry if your refrigerator or dishwasher might leak.

We have hardwood on our kitchen and so far we haven't had any problems. Our appliances pull out easily for cleaning with no scratches or dings. I struggled with the hardwood decision because of water issues, but since our kitchen is open to the dining and family rooms, we decided to go with hardwood. I love it.

I don't see anything wrong with changing the flooring. If say the living room blended into the kitchen and the living room was carpet and the kitchen was vinyl or wood it would be fine. I've also seen where living rooms combined with dining rooms have different flooring. I actually like the look.

That being said, I had hardwood floors throughout my kitchen and it was never a problem.
