If I were in your position with a 12 year old mattress, I would choose to buy a new one. Our current mattress was purchased after we went on vacation and slept better on a motel bed than in our own bed. We bought a new mattress as soon as we came home, and our decision at that time was to replace our mattresses far more frequently than we have been. I think next year is our replacement year; we replaced both girls mattresses last year.
