MEMORABLE CEILING-- OPINIONS?

FairOaksLivingRoom_-25.jpg

It's in a 1920's English Tudor in Indianapolis.  Isn't the wood ceiling magnificent?  I love it in all its glory, but perhaps some might find it almost too "omnipresent"?   It's always going to be the most dominant part of the room.  But, love, love, love!

Designer Tiffany Skilling had a lot to work with in this house, and I'm glad she kept what looks to be an original polychrome treatment up there on the living room ceiling.

Were I the homeowner, I'd have to be on my back frequently, looking up and sighing...

I don't think it would be at all oppressive or overwhelming to live with, since you can see in this shot that the ceilings are quite high...

By contrast, the dining area, just off the kitchen, has its ornate ceiling painted....

What do you think of that decision?   Here, I could go either way, I think-- painted or left natural.

It's like an extension of the charming blue and white kitchen.  Love those vintage pendant lights.

Indianapolis is a treasure trove of 19th and early twentieth century houses, like Buffalo is a trove of those, and of Art Deco.  Cleveland too.  Hope the local preservationists are active!

In this shot of a little sitting room near the front, you can see how the Gothic arch doorways are carried through the house, starting right at the front door...

And this Gothic door even has a stained glass detail!

Speaking of doors, look at this carved one going into the laundry room--

Even this one leading into what I think is the master bath, has that graceful arch...

Tiffany Skilling even won a coveted design award for this bathroom....

I'd love to post the whole house!   If you like Tudors like I do, it could be worth a more complete look, at Tiffany Skilling's online site.  It's in her portfolio under  "Fair Oaks English Tudor".

I like decorative ceilings. The wood ceiling is magnificent BUT I find it "too much" for the room.

The ceiling should be higher and less furniture in the room.

Separately the ceiling and the room are delightful to look at. But they are too much together. You need more breathing room in my opinion.

All are beautiful for the time periods in the photos-----I like all the archways and decorative mouldings and doors and built- ins. I would do a few "fancy" add ons if I were to remodel  house----but not alot. I like a more modern house with just a few pops of interesting architecture. the colors are very nice too.

I like all of the rooms but the ornate ceilings take away from the rooms beauty because your eye goes straight to the ceiling and stays there. It gives the rooms a claustrophobic feel IMO.

I love beams but that's as far as I would go.

Love getting the diverse opinions on ceiling here!  It will be interesting to see whether team "keep it" or team "paint it over" prevails....

Oznell, the decor and furnishings are beautiful! Understated elegance.

I love the blue in the kitchen and the tile that coordinates with the chairs, the arch doorways. To be honest, I would just live in the laundry room!

I love the white painted ceiling!! The wood ceiling is lovely; it's not my taste but I can see the appeal.

I dislike the first ceiling....way too heavy an appearance for the lovely room.  Not a good feeling to me. Cat Frustrated
