I don't see where you have the space in that room for a sofa, there is quite a few things in that room.

The room is actually quite large and will handle a full size sofa and two chairs along with other wood pieces quite well.
My problem is I have a lot of antique wood pieces, some of which go back generations in my family, that I have acquired over the years and don't wish to part with. So I'm willing to part with the upholstered pieces (to a point!) and scale down their size to keep the wood.
Funny, but I remember when we moved in here 23 years ago, I couldn't begin to fill the room, as I had a sofa, a chair, a coffee table, one small end table and my curio. We could have held a square dance in that room, even with the furniture!
It is amazing how things accumulate over the years! And I don't even want to think about the pieces I will inherit should my mom pass away. Then I will have some big decisions to make, as she has several pieces I want to keep as well!

I like to lay on my couch (or take a nap)). I would never give that up. I have 2 couches, no loveseat.

In the future, I will find just the right love seat, and plan to scale down the size of the chairs in that room when I replace those, so I can keep all the wood pieces, still have adequate seating, but "unstuff" the room a bit!
Anyone else give up a sofa in the living room, and have any input in how it worked out for them?
@Mominohio, I don't have a separate living room like yours. My living room or den is 33' long, though, and I've had to rearrange many times and try to be creative, to break it up into a computer/sitting area and then the TV watching/visiting area. This room is a work in progress after several years.
Like you, I have lots of handed down pieces that I like to use, so it has always been a struggle having the right amount of soft--leather or upholstered--furniture mixed in with hard furniture--wood or trunk shapes, etc. There is still one long section of wall with all hard pieces and it bugs me. Unlike your room, mine is a very eclectic blend of different styles, so at least you have a theme going. I like the loveseat/sofa choices that have been shared on your thread already.
I like where your thoughts are headed in adding a loveseat and downsizing the two chairs a bit. I can see that working out perfectly in the area, adding back just enough softness to balance with your wood pieces.
Please share more pics if you go for it.

I think a couch of some sort makes a living room more inviting. It wouldn't be my choice to remove it.

My living room is small, so I have a small, plush sofa. It's a two-seater rather than the full-size three-seater I replaced. It fits so much better because it doesn't get in the way of the coat closet in the corner like the other did. I have a bay window with a window seat in it that's 74" wide x 24" deep and could sit four. Combined with other chairs, there's more seating than I need for company. Do what works for you. You'll be happier with it. I was so glad to get rid of that oversized (for my room) sofa.

I can't stand to lay on a couch. I hear my mother telling us to go to bed if we want to lay down! LOL
I also can't take it on my lower back anymore (oh the aging process!), as it aches terribley after just a short time.
But we do still have a big family room with a full size sofa, and that is where our tv is too, so my husband and son can still stretch out on the couch there if they feel the need (and boy to they feel the need quite often!!! LOL).
I just find it hard to balance upholstered furniture that provides the proper comfort, with the style I'm looking for, and now a bit smaller size.
Usually smaller furniture isn't as comfortable, and comfortable furniture is big and over stuffed and not appealing in appearance to me.
Oh the struggles we face!!! LOL
It makes me tired enough for a nap!

Hello from Texas. Yes, about two years ago I got rid of the sofa and loveseat. They were 25 yrs old, in good shape because hardly any one sat on them, except the pugs. To replace them I got two lazy boy recliners. Now, I live in a small country cottage house, 1100sqft. My lining room has been opened up. On the longest wall I placed the two recliners, an oak coffee table between them. On each side of the recliners is a corner/wall and I put black wrought iron etegares there, with plants. Very simple. There is a front window. On the opposite side, the shorter wall, I put two resin wicker chairs with a large old fashioned trunk in between. That wall has a window and another front window. The space in between I have a very large entertainment center and then placed my lazy boy recliner in front with a side oak coffee table. That’s it. Very simple and now the pugs have their own recliner. LOL. Don’t miss the couch at all.

I have to admit, as the sofa went out the door, I had a mini panic attack.
I've always had a sofa. Never remember a living room in my life that didn't have one. I thought it through for over a year and was pretty set on that particular sofa going out the door regardless of my ability to replace it and with what. But when it left, I thought to myself 'what have I done?!' At the same time, it was, like you said, quite a relief to be rid of something I knew I no longer wanted.
I have nothing chosen to replace it, and frankly, haven't budgeted it in, even with all this deciding a long time ago that it would be going. I'm not usually good at winging it, but the last week has been rather fun, and I've rearranged the room three times, trying different things.
I'm pretty sure I won't be buying a love seat or a new collection of chairs anytime soon. I'm going to let it all marinate for a while and see what I come up with.

I had to read your post several times as one word was horribly distracting and I couldn't get past it.....Pug!!!!!!!!!!
I love Pugs. My aunt used to breed them, and what a bunch of characters she had, as many as 20 at a time in her kennel (and they got to come into the house a lot too, what a commotion that would be!). She gave my mom a black male and she named him Buster. My mom lives next door, so Buster was in our home every day from the time my son (and Buster, who was born just a few months before my son) was born until Buster passed when he was 13.
They are the most lovable breed, and we still miss him, even though he has been gone 8 years now.
The way you describe your room sounds warm and cozy. You confirmed for me, one thing I had doubts about, and that is having a coffee table when you don't have a sofa or love seat. I'm rather traditional, and it seemed to me that a coffee table in a room would be out of place without one of those two pieces. But I placed the coffee table in front of two chairs as a grouping, and I was so pleasantly surprised at how well I like that look.
I'm so glad that the Pugs have their own recliner, because anything less would simply be neglect. LOL
I've always thought that Pugs were simply little wrinkled people. They have such expression in those eyes, they practically talk. We have had a lot of different breeds of dogs over my lifetime, but that Pug had more character than most of the rest combined....and they deserve the best!
