Re: Kitchens with open shelving

While the after photos "appear" that its a larger space, in reality it is not. I prefer the before photo.

I need doors on my cabinets, I don't nor do I want to spend every waking moment making sure that every item in my kitchen is placed perfectly. The turquoise color also does nothing for me, for a kitchen color.

For that particular homeowner, I think that kitchen update makes a lot of sense.  Thanks for sharing the link.

Re: Kitchens with open shelving

I'd become tired of that turquoise in less than a year. A long time ago, I redid my kitchen and bought a huge side-by-side refrigerator in turquoise. By the time I moved, I was more than ready to leave that big blue blob behind.

Re: Kitchens with open shelving

I don't hate it, but it would not be for me. I think it looks nice, but again is not for me nor is it very practical. The turquoise is very trendy, and I would think one would get tired of it in a few years....I love cabinets with one or two glass doors though......

I don't like the new look ... perhaps because I don't like the colors she used.  I prefer dark (or black) shelving.

Not a fan of open shelving in the kitchen.

Looks like a Model Home Kitchen...pretty but not functional.

It's funny to read the comments after the article.

Where's the stove fan?

Where's the microwave?

Where's the coffee maker?

Where are the food items stored?

All good questions....

@Marsha2003 I guess if the homeowner wanted a different kitchen but cannot afford the cabinets it may be an option for some.

Re: Kitchens with open shelving

I agree with you @Mominohio.  I think the "after" kitchen is totally cute, but there is no way I'd want my dishes, etc. displayed like that.  Keeping the shelves and dishes dust free would just be too much work.  Cute, yes.  Functional, no.

Re: Kitchens with open shelving

I love what she did with the color and design, but I would have opted for clear panel cabinets before I went with open shelving. The last thing I want to do is have to wash a pan or pot before I can use it and that's what open shelving means to me.

Re: Kitchens with open shelving

It's what she likes, that's what it's all about.

If I could wiggle my nose & have a remodel, I would have glass doors up top and DRAWERS on the bottom!    I dislike the black hole when you open that bottom door.   I have wasted so much money finding & using all kinds of organizational tools.    Drawers are the BEST.    Shallow to deep, so handy and no black hole

What do you think?

I personally realize the original was dated, but in very nice condition. The after is very trendy, but I can't stand all the open shelving. Nice for display, but not practical for keeping things clean or storing things that don't 'fit'.
