Re: I spilled laundry detergent, help please

I once knocked a full gallon of paint off the ladder onto the wall to wall carpet. Luckily I had a carpet cleaner. I can't think of any shortcuts than using the carpet cleaner.

Had this happen with floor in car. Put a large container of Dawn behind seat. Part of the seat poked a hold in the container. Didn't realize until several days later when I went to put the non-perishables away. Almost 2 cups of Dawn on the rug.

We pulled the carpet out and saturated with a mixture of fabric softener and water; followed that up with white vinegar, then used the wet dry vac to remove most of the liquid. Did the vinegar again, vacuumed up the liquid.

If only I could take up the carpet....I'll have to get out the carpet cleaner and some vinegar.....

Grab your squeegee and scoop the soap right into a dustpan!

or From How to clean things . net

http://www.howtocleanstuff.net/how-to-clean-up-liquid-soapdetergent-spills/

You will need:

  • Kitty litter
  • Salt
  • Soft cloths
  • Paper towels
  • Water
  • Spray bottle
  • Dustpan
  • Wet vac

Steps to Clean Up the Spill:

  1. Carpets can be a real pain to get clean when soap or detergent spills on them. Soaking up as much as possible with absorbent kitty litter or salt is an important first step.
  2. Pour either item on top of the spill and allow it to soak up the liquid for several minutes.
  3. Use soft cloths to scrape the moistened absorbent from the surface of the carpet into a dustpan.
  4. Repeat until no more soap is absorbed.
  5. Next, lay paper towels or soft cloths on top of the area and press firmly.
  6. Repeat until no more soap is absorbed into the towels or cloths.
  7. At this point, there should be a minimal amount of soap in the carpet that can be removed with moisture and a wet vac or carpet cleaner.
  8. Spray the surface with water and suction it back out with the wet vac.
  9. Repeat until the soap is removed.
  10. It may take some time to remove all of the soap, depending on how much remains in the carpet.
  11. Once all of the soap is removed, allow the carpet to air dry completely.

The chemicals in the soap are dirt attractors....and that invisible layer of soap will always attract dirt in the same spot...and the chemicals make it oily. Problems might not arise until months from now when you're inside more. I know everyone means well with DIYs, but believe me....Stanley Steemer (or professional cleaner of your choice) doesn't cost that much and you know it's done right....and if it's not, you have a guarantee they'll fix.
