I suggest you talk to the apt management, they should have done that when the last tenant moved out and before you moved in.  No way should you have to pay for it.

Agreed.  And maybe look up the renter's laws in your state. For me, an apartment that reeked of smoke would be uninhabitable and might be a legal violation that would let you out of your lease if they refuse to address the issue.

Hi @JBKO.

We had to do this when we sold my folks home.

Buy some clear shallow cups.  Buy a few gallons of vinegar. You can also use bowls.

Pour vinegar halfway up the cup and put them all over the home.

Refill and dump the old every 2 days for a week.

Works like a charm.  I hope this helps.

The carpet , that is tricky.

I've found vinegar to be the best solution for removing smoke odors.  If you own or can borrow a carpet cleaner, use a vinegar solution in it.  Ask your landlord to have the carpet treated; most do that before renting an apartment.

Your landlord should have rented the apartment to another smoker, or paid for a company that deep cleans after fires, floods, etc to clean that apartment suitably for a non smoker.

Wow, cannot believe the landlord did not paint and clean carpets before you moved in!  That is who I would start with, is the landlord, and go from there  .......  you should not have to pay a penny, unless they will not work with you!

Re: How to Get Rid of Smoke Odors?

Glad there's no carpet to deal with for this because it would probably have to be ripped out and replaced.  Maybe even the underflooring (whatever that's called) would also need to be replaced.

I also agree with the poster who said to scrub down the walls/ceilings before painting over them.

If there are any curtains or drapes they need to be dealt with, too.  Pretty much anything that is not impervious to the smoke will need either cleaning or replacing.

Too bad she could not have gotten a different apartment.   Did she rent it sight unseen?

Re: How to Get Rid of Smoke Odors?

How about laying around baking sheets with baking soda on them. Baking soda is an amazing ordor killing. Cheap too. Just buy the BIG  box at the grocery store or wherever  you shop.

Also, on Amazon they have a great solid air freshener - I think it is a Renuzit brand for neutralizing odors. I keep one of these on the floor next my my litter box and used to have one next to my bunny cage also years back.  Maybe it is Super Ordor Killer, or Neutralizer, or something to that effect... I have seen another Ordor Neatrulizer at the store, but it is NOT the same at ALL.

I order them by the dozen and one usually last a good 3-4 weeks depending on the air flow in the room. I would set them everywhere around the house for this problem. Probably a few in each room at least.

For smoke odor though,  I would open the thing all the way up and let it start working on the ordor, replacing when almost gone and repeating this until you walk in and smell nothing.

I believe there are special paints designed to cover this smell when the walls are painted.
