Several years ago, we replaced our windows with the tilt in kind, so they are easy to clean. In all my houses prior to this time, I had to climb ladders to clean the outside of the upstairs windows, so those only got washed once a year. The ones on the lower level I could do and reach much easier, and would do them every month in the nicer weather.
I hate dirty windows. The ones that we can see out of easily (that aren't covered by curtains that cover the whole window) get cleaned about once a month. Those in the bedrooms upstairs, that have lace curtains and shades and we can't see out of as easily, now get done maybe three times a year. Sliding glass door gets done at least once a week because of dog nose prints.
My best friend has lived in her house since the early 1990's and has never washed a window. I think I'd croak!
How often to you wash your windows?

Not often enough. But due to your post, I will think about it when I get home! LOL

Not near as often as you; dirty windows don't stress me. Probably 2-3x a year.

When everyday looks like a foggy day.

Twice per year. I have to use professionals because of the height. I wish I had tilt-in windows that I could wash myself. That would be wonderful.

I live on the second floor and my old windows were not easy to work with so I used to hire to have it done twice a year. Since I got new windows they are a breeze to lift out and clean and I do it myself twice a year now. It's truly maddening, though, how it seems to rain within 24 hrs. of EVERY SINGLE TIME I do it!
P.S. to Persephonie: The guy I used to hire used Dawn soap in a bucket of water and did the squeegee thing. When I started doing them myself I got myself a squeegee from Home Depot and use a little Dawn soap in a bucket and it works great!

When I worked in retail, we used Tide (powdered) in water with a squeegee. That soap and water with squeegee method gives the cleanest windows, I think that they repel dirt a little better too.

I have cleaned windows a number of ways through the years. I sometimes use Windex and paper towels, I sometimes use just water and Super Cloth, and there is a new cloth out that my mom found on Q that you can just use water as well, and I have used those too.
Tide (powdered) and water with squeegee in a retail setting got the windows more sparkling than any other method I've seen.
