How does one find a realtor?

I'm looking to buy a house in the near future. How do I go about finding a good realtor? I've done the word-of-mouth/personal reference method before and that never worked out.

I want to make sure they are qualified, but also I must have a good rapport with them. I definitely don't want to be "friends" with them, but I need to make sure our personalities mesh, and that they know what they are doing.

Do I just call a real estate agency and make an appointment with someone who works there?
