Re: How about a thread sharing what renovation work

DH and I did the "This Olde House" thing on our 2 story wood frame home back north. Gutted rooms, insulation, new walls, ceilings, floors. Ceramic tile floor in kitchen. When we sold it after moving to Florida, the real estate agent listed it as a Dream House. Down here we only needed a few cosmetic changes indoors. I've done a lot outside in my gardens and yards. It used to be called Sweat Equity.

We finished painting our kitchen and painting the cabinets and spray painting the hardware. My wishlist is new countertop, back splash and new appliances.

We painted the living room, den, and hallway. Replaced inside doors and trim. We like to pay as we go otherwise I’d do it all at one time. Need to paint the four bedrooms. We have enough projects for the rest of my life.

Re: How about a thread sharing what renovation work

Good topic for this time of year!

I have arranged for a handyman to come in either this week or next to address my growing To Do list. Something to repair or replace in just about every room. Should take a day or two. When that's done, I will have someone else come in to help declutter the garage and basement. That should take a few hours. When that's done I may list the house for sale and downsize for a second time, this time to a state that's not so expensive for someone on a fixed income.

I see a couple of people in my neighborhood have had mulch delivered, thinking it would be spring by now. Nope, not yet. Next weekend is forecast to finally see 60 degrees. We will all be outdoors cleaning up all the debris that winter left in it's wake this year.

We are getting new carpet in master bedroom suite & family room.  It's a multicolored tan/brown/grey.

I'm getting the master bedroom & bath painted. It will be the same colors, lavender & purple, but I'm changing the ceiling and top of trayed ceiling to an icy white instead of lavender.  The master bath will be lavender and icy white.

Re: How about a thread sharing what renovation work

As two oldsters thinking of our future, we finally had our kitchen and laundry room remodeled and are now in the process of our first floor half bath and one full bath upstairs beginning.  The bath off our MBR will be the last.  After that, fourth BR upstairs will finish our second floor.

We need to paint ceilings and rooms in hallway, LR, DR, and FR, as well as three-season room.  Deck needs some rework.

The biggest challenge will be cleaning out so much stuff accumulated in over 40 years in this house.  Collectors, savers, etc.  Big attic, cellar, three-car garage, etc.  You get the picture.  KIds have taken some things, but their houses are full.  But my DD's childhood white furniture is being used by my DS's little daughter.  My DIL fixed it up so very well!  We have given away stuff, thrown away junk, and donated to charities.  So much more to go.

Why did we wait so long to do this?  Well, time, energy, and money.  College for the kids, then helping them get their feet on the ground.  We both worked long hours on our jobs, and I retired first, hoping to start tackling some stuff.  LIterally a few weeks after I retired, my dear mom started getting sick.  The next couple years were spent devoted to my mom until she passed.  Then it was one thing after another, with my health issues, not so serious but limiting.  Our kids live in the area, but lead extremely busy work and family lives.

I try to look for the good.  Everything we have done and plan is very current.  No one here wants a "fixer-upper."

Wishing everyone the best in your home improvement plans!

Re: How about a thread sharing what renovation work

We are in a fairly new home so anything we do is just to improve things or make something more our taste.

On that subject - how do you all feel about Corian countertops? We are thinking of replacing the formica ones we have with corian. Don't want to pay for granite as our kitchen is 12 x20 and has counters all the way around - the cost for granite would be much too high.

Also - what material do you all have in your bathroom counters? Ours are also formica.

My sister had corian in herbathroom, it was very nice...I prefer quartz....but we did a nice upgraded laminate when we made improvements in our kitchen...the house did not warrant the quartz that I really wanted.

Re: How about a thread sharing what renovation work

We are in the process of finishing the last room in the house to be painted.

We didn't change wall colors but what I did was paint all the wall frames white to unify them, got rid of all the mismatched table top photo frames and bought all new, matching color and style, switched out all the dark nick-nacks to lighter ones, got rid of some of them and moved some to other places.  Pared down stuff on flat surfaces.

New pillows and throws for the living room.

Once all the painting is done, we will be replacing the bedroom carpeting and the kitchen countertop.

Re: How about a thread sharing what renovation work

Great thread.

I have too many to list!

I have a 1600 sq ft townhouse, 3 levels, with a partially finished basement.  I am in the middle of a row of 6.

I am past the DIY stage in my life.  Repainting my living room a few years ago just about broke me and I think I made my living room ceiling worse than it was (I was patching after ceiling fans were installed and I didn't do a good job).

I purchased new in 1993 and have only replaced the carpet on 2 levels with hard wood floors and painted periodically.

I was thinking of refreshing my bathrooms and had someone out to give me a quote, but for $2500 each, I might as well spend ~$5000 and just completely remodel it to update the tub/shower, tile and vaniety.

Getting started is hard as I hate the mess.

I'm in the same boat.  My house does not have high end anything, so it would look out of place to have something expensive like that at this time.
