Here's an old camping trick: ants hate sandalwood incense. Buy some of good quality (I use Fred Soll's), light a couple of sticks in the bathroom, close the door, and come back in thirty minutes or so. They will be gone!

It's somewhat difficult to keep them out from home. They simply continue moving to another area. When you thought you had them under control, there they are again. Sealing all holes where they can enter into your house is would do I think or seal all cracks and any small openings and if nothing works then you should look for pest control or you can also look here.

Every year, usually in August, the ants appear. The ants on the counter I sweep under the faucet, but DH does put out the plastic traps. The ants remain for about a month, drives me nuts because they get on me and they bite! DH has to constantly take the kitchen garbage bag down as it is full of ants, even if there is no food in it.

Vacuum cleaner.
Ants outside the house perform a valuable act of nature, by carrying seeds back to their nest, where they eat the seed coat and then dispose of the seed in their "waste" yard. If you've ever had stuff pop up in the garden unexpectedly, it could be ants dispersing the seed.
I don't like them in the house, though. I find that the "skinks" (beautiful blue-tailed lizards) around my home lap up the ants like candy. If I poisoned the ants I would then poison the skinks and there would always be a need for poison. I don't want to live in a toxic environment. JMO

Terro...I have the outdoor spikes near my kitchen window because that is the only place I get ants...all over my counterop....those stakes worked wonders, and it's time to get them out again as the ants have returned.
