Re: Housekeeper

[ Edited ]

Anyone who has to clean in a "hot" house, why not wear "summer" clothing?  Take a change of clothes like shorts and a tank top, and then change back into your regular clothes before you leave.  If it's a home with people you are close to and love, maybe even take a cool shower after cleaning.

Or, offer the people a blanket to wrap themselves up in and put a space heater in the room they are in to keep them warm while you open windows or turn the heat down while you are cleaning the rest of the house.  Then you'd only have one "hot" room to clean.

Thanks for the replies. I figured they would be able to find someone through their Church that way they would be comfortable with them in their home.

I was looking online at Care dot com. I would never use Craigslist.

I will just have to do some more checking to see what I can come up with.

They wanted to move into a retirement facility until we told them it was $2500 per month which they cannot afford.

We finally found someone to do the mowing for $30. That's cheap & he only does it when it needs it. The mowers around here do it weekly or they won't do it.

DH's dad won't let me turn on the AC to stay cool while cleaning. He's always cold that's why the heat is on. He's like my Aunt that ran her heat in the summer!!! Even if he would let me turn on the AC I would never get finished because they both want to chat. I would only do it with them not there which makes it difficult. I don't even go visit because it's so hot.

@Nightowlz.....I was recently in this situation with my own mom.  I did her grocery shopping and her laundry, both easy because she had so little of both.  But when it came to cleaning or even visiting, her apartment was always so warm!  I would tell her all the time, and she knew it, but she was always cold.  Just changing the sheets on the bed I would break out sweating! When my brother was home visiting from Mississippi, where he is very used to the heat, he would say how warm it was....so I know it wasn't just me 😊.  Just wanted to let you know, I get where you are coming from.

AND, my mom was a smoker, making it hot and smelly 😝

They are her in laws not her parents.  She owes them nothing. Let her husband go over there and clean.  his parents, his responsibility.

@KathyPet

I married to their son so I do feel like I have some responsibility.

DH has a full time job so when do you think he would have time to do that?

He does have 3 sisters but it's all left for him to deal with.

OP Your excuse for not helping your inlaws is a bit sidelined. Just say you don't want to do it. Its too hot? Really? You'll be there for about an hour! I'm sure you could withstand that. When my parents were elderly, I went there periodically and cleaned their place. I remember those times fondly because thats when we had our most wonderful conversations! Oh well, good luck anyway in your search .

@ID2 You are criticizing for something you obviously haven't experienced.  I'll weigh in here.  I have no doubt it is too hot.  My aunt kept her house so hot you could barely stand it for 30 minutes just to sit and talk.

In the freezing winter I would go see her in a short sleeved t-shirt, stand on her porch and get so cold my teeth chattered, ring the bell and in less than 30 minutes I'd be sweating like crazy.

My dad always thought it was a real hoot and laughed at me.  Of course HE wouldn't go see her!  You could have smothered in that house.  I don't know how they stand it, but truly nobody could be expected to work or stay long in a house like that.

@Sooner I'm always hot. I wear the same shirts all year round because I cannot wear long sleeve shirts, sweaters etc.

Went to bed last night & DH said I'm freezing so I told Alexa to set the heat to 67° which is too hot for me. LOL!!!

My dad thinks his girls are all crazy. He said when we wanted to buy a generator for power outages all we wanted to know was can we run the ac with it. LOL!!!

If we have a plumbing problem or AC problem I check in the hotel until it's fixed.
