@Kachina624   I realize that but informally a city worker might stick out his or her neck.  In the CT city I worked in for thirty-five years I knew a lot of people in various City Hall offices so was used to obtaining info that way.  I always enjoyed networking with people and usually got and gave good information.

At the very least they can probably give you a list of who is licensed properly by the state for a particular field or direct you to the proper section of the state website to find the official list of names, specialties, and license numbers.

@Abrowneyegirl Another idea that I had forgotten about would be to contact the local vocational school and see if under their teacher's supervision they could do the job.  I know in CT there were schools that did auto repairs, for example.

Re: Help, who do I hire?

I use the HomeAdvisor dot com website for all of my home projects.  No job is too big or too small...they do it all! Most of the help is local-based. I prefer it that way. I'm done using national companies who hire the locals anyway.

I have never had a problem with HA. Before they send me a person from the list of their recommendations I always check that person out before I make my decision to use them. I would never just use a person that HA picked for me without knowing their background and track record. I may not know how to fix a lot of things in my house but I know what to look for when I need to choose a person that does.

I like to vet who I hire myself and read reviews on all the sites and then hire them directly and not through a service.

I also agree with not cutting a hole in your roof.  Every person in my development who has one (or more!) satellite dishes on their roof has had serious roof problems.  My neighbor had an attic fan put in and their roof has never been the same and they ended up replacing it after 3 attempts at patching it.

I would never let anyone who was not a professional roofer anywhere near my roof.
